Question...and I'm hoping Bruce will look at this and give me input, but for everyone else too.

Let's say that you don't have studio monitors. What you DO have is the following: AKG K220M headphones, Aiwa Bookshelf stereo speakers, Phillips 5.1 speaker system, Cerwin-Vega 15" PA speaker pair, JBL TRS 225 pair, Fender 1275X speaker pair. Now, of this list, what would be the best to use until you can afford some real studio monitors?
I have all the listed stuff, and I really want to record, I don't want to just do nothing until I can afford monitors. I know what I SHOULD get, but what of this list could be used in the meantime? Any help?

Hmmm - need more description of each type of speaker you have - the Phillips for example - if it's a proper 5.1 surround system, you should be able to use that. I wouldn't bother with the PA speakers... I couldn't find out anything on the JBLs you mentioned, so I need more info... are all those PA monitors (JBL and Fenders)?? - if so, again forget about it!

If those bookshelfs are at least a 6/7 inch cone with reasonable high-end, you could get by with them in the same manner that people get by with the NS-10s... you'd have to learn how to translate the sound from those to other systems. That combined with the headphones to help judge the low-end may get you by in the short term.... but you seriously need some real monitors - why don't you sell off a pair or two of the PA stuff???

Ya know, for around $200US you can get a pair of Yorkville YSM-1s - very decent nearfields for not too many pesos!

Hope this helps...
Bruce :)

Thanks Bruce.
Yes those are ALL PA speakers. I can't get rid of them, cause they're my live setup. BUT - I found a guy close to me that is a Yorkvile Dealer and he said he could get the YSM-1's for me for $98 a piece and have them Monday if I wanted. So for that cheap, I think I'll swing it for those. Thanks for the help!

I have a pair of the Yorkvilles and can recomend them highly.

Hey Bruce,
Looks like that might make 4 of us now with the Yorkvilles! :> Others seem interested now too after reading my other post in the mixing/mastering forum.

Well, I don't actually have them myself - I've heard them and thought they were very decent. I do recommend them, especially if the words "money" & "budget" come up!

:)
