Whats the best way to display?

Hey all.

I've seen a bunch of pictures of home studios...so of which show guitars being hung or perhaps displayed on a wall. Is this a safe practice with regards to humidity? What would be a safe/ideal range of humidity and temperature? I know I could use the extra space as I have six or seven guitars (some semi-valuable) and a small area (12 x 13).

Any advice is appreciated.

It's no better or worse then having them out on stands. They way to really store a guitar (even though it looks cool to have 7 guitars out on the floor being proudly displayed) is in it's case with a packet of that "do not eat" silica gel.

I agree. All of my guitars are kept in their cases. I keep them stored in a walk-in closet that has only guitars in it. It makes a pretty neat display for itself, walking into a closet lined on all sides with guitar cases :)

although the closet idea is kinda cool, it's definately not necessary. a good guitar will hold up anywhere... ok not under water...;)

It'll hold up anywhere, maybe. Thats only if you think a warped neck and crumbling fingerboard are OK. Changes in humidity that are constantly happenign outside a guitars case DO do damage to the instrument. The only way to get aorudn it is to get one of those graphite ones. Flea from the Chili Peppers uses a graphite just for that purpose. No matter WHERE he is playing out that night, the neck feels the same.

yeah i know. but i have my ibanez jem for 8 years now, it has been everywhere i go, from steamy little bars to large outside venues, and never had a prob with it. i think a good guitar can have morwe then people think before it's starts warpin' and such. though carefullness is never waisted...

so i never had a crumbling fingerboard nor warping neck , maybe the day after the gig it would be detuned a little...

Yeah, but 8 years old is not really old. I have 2 guitars that are 25 years old, 1 that is going on 40, and 1 that is 85. If there were to become a problem with one of those, it would be difficult to get it fixed. I DO have a couple guitars that I keep out all the time, an Epi LesPaul and a Parker Fly. They are very rarely in the case, just because I play them so much. I think if you play it all the time, its ok to be out. Just not out for storage, unless you have a temperature and humidity controlled room. And, of course, this applied mainly to nicer guitars, too.

not old at all. i bought it second hand so the guitar is older but my point was that it isn't necessary. and i play it all the time :)

don't know what i was trying to say maybe you should regard it as a comment.

and it is only applicable to the nicer guitars... which my jem is:):)

yeah, I should have said "more fragile" guitars.

Especially acoustics with solid tops. I have seen many a cracked top that could have been prevented with a little tlc. I think it's not AS big a deal with electrics...but it really depends on your guitar and the finish. Seems like the old nitro-cellulose cracks easier than then polyvinyl and lacquors they use today.

I would by a wine coloured mexi-strat to add to my mexican strat collection..... I love mexican strats.... Just as nice as Usa, allthough a little chincy on certain components, and wood. You can whip the fucker across the stage, at your drummers head, rendering it smashed to pieces (damn drummers hard heads...), throw it out, and then buy another brand new for $359......Come on,,, I know you guys with the $1300 Usa strats, are jealous, that us mexi lovers can be this frivelous!
Joe...(Owner of 2 Mexi strats...)

yeah i fucked up an old acoustic that way... couldn't care less as it was crappy and old but yeah it cracked...

sorry man, i'm utterly stupid. but, as i'm european, can you explain that highway crossing thing... is it an insider joke?

it's not a joke.legend has it that robert johnson, one of the blues legends, made a deal with the devil where highways 61 and 49 cross in clarksdale mississippi, usa.the clapton tune crossroads was written by robert johnson in the late 1930's.story goes he made a deal with the devil to trade his soul to become the greatest guitar player of his time.he died very young.after becoming the premier blues player of the era.he would turn his back when playing so other guitarest couldn't steal his licks.no one seems to be sure of how he died.some say he was poisened by a bartender whose wife he was fooling around with.some say he drank to much moonshine that had a high lead content, and some say he was shot, which would be another kind of lead poisioning.no one seems to know exactly where he is burried either.there are acouple of monuments erected at places belived to be his grave. he wrote some great tunes though.most of which were stolen in the 60's and 70's.clapton does several of them so did grateful dead.if my spelling were better i would list some of them.malted milk was one.terraplane blues was another.any ways, thats about all i know about it.so maybe you can make a deal for a diablo with the devil.seems pretty costly to me,and as for playing i think i'll just keep practising.
as to the humidity thing the only time i have had any proplems is when i moved from tucson,az,to greenwood,ms.i had to have the neck on my strat adjusted.my accoustic's and bass came through fine though.maybe because i left them in their cases for quite a while.im tucson you had to put a humidifer in your case to stop your guitars from getting to dry.

cool story. guess i'll have to save up... i'm an atheist...:D no use asking the devil for favours then hey?

Um oktay

I would have a Gibson es-335 with a black finish two dimarzio pickups a Steves Special and a paf.
In the guitar I would have a pod built in and the use a wireless system so i would never need a amp to lugaround and have two cords one for the foot switch and one for the power that would work good.
