modelling preamps

You know, it is possible to design a mic modeller that actually works. The trick is that you need a high end mic to get all the sublties that an expensive, well designed diaghram would have. Then, it is not much of a trick to create the frequency response and peaks and vallys of the modelled version sinc a microprocessor could auto EQ and model the freq spectrum quite easily. . It will not work with a cheap mic because of the above info. So, if you spend 2-4K for the best mic you can get, with the flatest freq response and a very sensative diaghram, it is possible.
Oops. Fletcher has this right. I thought we were talking about MIC modelling. You CAN do the same with a pre modeller, but again, you would have to start with the best designed very expensive pre and model worse designs. You cannot ADD things like headroom, transient response etc. You can model starting at high end and work your way down, but you can't work your way up.

I purchased the MMP-2 on a whim a few weeks ago because a) it got good reviews and b) it was dirt cheap, down from $600. I can't say enough how pleased I am with this unit. Forget about the modelling, it is a very good mic pre...crisp, clear, and full. I don't, and never did, care for "mic modelling", but the preamp modelling did sound interesting. So, while it's not akin to having an Avalon 737 and Neve 1073, they DO sound pretty good, and go a long way to giving you a pallette to work off of.

I own a Joe Meek, and have used a bunch of other pres. But bang for the buck and quality wise, this thing is a steal at some stores' current prices.
Peace

Oh goody... another crock of shit like the "mic modeler'... wonderful... kill me now.

It seems like there are a lot of preamp modeler threads coming around now. It kind of reminds me when the Lexicon Core 2 cards were being blown out. It's still crap even though it's on sale.

Yeah, at best modelling preamps might be a fun toy or effect.

I'm interested in modeling preamps because they might end up being good for direct recording with synths, POD's, drum samples, bass guitar, etc. To add color and character.

. I'm all for 'breaking laws' whenever possible... but the laws of physics are pretty non-negotiable... even in the digital domain.

they can't be broke, but they sure as hell can bend...i.e. Flying...

Ok , the proofs in the pudding.
If you have lots of dollars for mics and the talent to know how to get them to do what you want, just maybe, you would not benefit from a mic modeling preamp. But
I have been using the Roland Mmp-2 mic modeling preamp for my HOMEstudio for about 6 months and have achieved much better results than I could EVER get with my equipment and recording talent before. I was getting all kinds of noise through my yamaha $1000 mixer and now I dont!

Sure theres lots of guys who already know it all and can condemn any book by its cover, but have they tried this thing?? probably most have not I would guess.

For the home studio and at the prices that its available right now,
$170 NEW on ebay, you just cant get a better upgrade in your recording for less!!!

It has a great roland 24/96 analog to digital converter for starters. Then its got a parametric equalizer, and a dynamics section for compression and enhancer as well as a de-esser.

Yeah, it models some mics and models some preamps but who cares, if you dont like them , dont use them then!
just listen to for the sound you want to get out of your mic and save it as a preset. You have control over a lot of variables with this unit.

Heres a link, take a look

I highly recommend it.
I'm not looking for a debate here, Im just sharing my feelings on what I think is a blanket prejudice by many of mic modeling equipment in general and the Roland mmp-2 in particular.
Dollar for dollar its a bargain :)

Peace

I can't wait until we have holodecks. I want to jam with Hendrix through his Marshall stack. Come on Roland get on it.
