Hello folks.
Mormally I do my recording in our studio. But a situation has come up that requires me to record a band on location.
A local Christian band wants to record in their church sancutary.. minus an audience. Just a five-piece gospel/rock band and me with my equipment.
I've got a Mackie 24x8, 3 ADAT-XT20's, a couple of snake reels, and my case of mics. I want to control the sound as much as I can.. so my question is: should I use mic pre-amps or a compressor?
Appreciate your input on this.

Both.
I find the Mackies are great for live recording. (the mic pres).

Get a stereo live, and extra close mics on the cabs and drums, and vocals.

If the ambience is nice I even like to record another stereo pair of the church's natural verb.
At least compression on the drums and vocals.
