Does mixing down to high end cassettes (such as Maxell XL II 60 cassettes.), sound better than mixing down to normal sterio cassettes?

Yeah, because the higher end tapes have a higher recording headroom (I think the best ones go up to +6dB), so you can record at louder levels without distortion. Practically, this reduces hiss (kinda, anyway, since when you turn up the volume, you turn up the hiss, too, and thus the louder your signal, the less obvious the hiss will be).

Most definately. In fact, the Maxell XL-II is most peoples tape of choice. However, I HIGHLY recommend mixing down to your computer. Its not hard, and doesn't need any special hardware other than a pretty standard stereo soundcard (an adequate one almost definately came with your computer). Check out the main site for info.

Hey Killer of Pain:

Sony used to sell a 60 minute cassette under the name of Sony Pro. I found this to be a good product.

However, the other info sent to you is also very reliable. The better the mechanism in the cassette, the less noise and clearer mix you will get.

Stay away from those Bayer products.
