Mixer setup help

I bought a Yamaha MG 10/2 and still have some time to assess before deciding whether I should return it and get a 4 Bus or something else instead. The goal is to record my sax along with some midi stuff.

As I'm new to the whole mixing thing, can someone tell me how to monitor with headphones through the mixer previously recorded midi and audio while laying down a new track. I know it's easier with a 4 Bus.

The equipment I have to hook up are a condenser mic, a synth, a keyboard controller (hooked up by USB), an external sound module and an audigy 2 soundcard (I know... it's on the list to be replaced). I also have an Alesis nanoverb Currently I don't have the synth hooked up and I am not using the nanoverb. I am running the mic into Channel 1 (XLR), the sound module is hooked up to channel 2 in stereo. The Stereo Outs are hooked up with an adapter into the line in of the audigy card and the output of the audigy is hooked to the "tape in" of the mixer. It works (sort of) but I have 2 problems: (1) I have to keep the volume of the "tape in" down or I get feedback (not really sure if this is going to be a problem) and (2) when I monitor previously recorded midi tracks while recording audio, all of the previous recorded stuff is recorded as audio on the new track (this IS a problem).

Any thoughts? Should I just exchange the mixer for a 4 bus? Is something other than a mixer a better idea? Please try to be simple (i.e., not too technical) in your response/explanation, I am just getting the hang of this.

I'm having the same problem with a UB1204 mixer and an Alesis nanosynth. Whenever I try to listen to what I've recorded into the computer and lay down a new audio track the sound from the nanosynth gets recorded. The nanosynth runs into channels 3 and 4 on the mixer so that I can hear everything from sound card and nanosynth through the same speakers. I hope someone has a fix for this problem.

dont connect from the sound card to the tape in. doing this sends that audio back through your mixers main outs and back to your soundcard. Instead, connect the out from the sound card to one of your unused channels of the mixer and keep the fader on that channel all the way down so it doesnt make it to your main outs and you can monitor from your Control Room out or your headphones out. Let us know if this helps...

I'm kinda stepping on Sax fan's post, but moving sound card outs to channel 4 and recording another audio track still picked up previously recorded sounds. I'll start my own thread and explain my set up with more detail.

You shouldnt be having this problem with the 1204.
Connect your Alt 3/4 outs to your soundcard ins. Then your SC outs to any available channels on your mixer. Then press the Alt3/4 button on the channel you want to send to your soundcard. You can monitor the whole mix but only the channel with the Alt 3/4 button pressed will be recorded.

I decided to return the Yammie and I got a Mackie 1202 vlz pro instead. I like the mixer, but I've got a ton to learn. Did you get your issue straightened out?

Thanks, will do. I think I finally got my situation worked out. I don't completely understand the "why," but I'm getting it to do what I want for now, so that's got to be a good thing.
