I want to buy and audio interface and I'm looking at the presonus firebox, but I'm hesitant because I might want more than two ins for recording drums. I've read places that having a mixer can augment the amount of tracks you can record at once with something like the firebox. I have a DJ mixer, a vestax pcv 275...can that kind of mixer help you record more tracks at once, or is it just mutli-track recording mixers that can do this?

With a 2 external preamps you could record up to 4 tracks at a time

Most mixers will mix multiple sources down to a stereo signal which can be fine but it means you have to get the mic's at just the right gain and panning to sound right.

You may want to consider a Delta 44/66 with 4 preamps or a mixer with an alt 3-4 bus to record 4 tracks at a time.
