mixdown problem

im trying to mix down a song that only has vocals and drums. the trouble is when i fade out the drums to leave just the vocals, the vocals get really loud on the mixdown tape. im using a tascam 414 mk II. i dont know what im doing wrong. any suggestions? thanx.

Are you using some sort of limiter or compressor during your mixdown? It sounds like perhaps the compressor is letting off the mix once the drums fade out... which would make the vocals get louder (while the sum of the total mix would actually stay the same).

yea i actually think the mixdown deck has automatic gain control cos i hooked the 4 track up to my other stereo and it didnt do it. so thats good, at least ive got another stereo to use (which i should use anyway cos its way better quality) ha ha ha. thanx for yur help honey.
