I need to rest my ears now and go enjoy a Beam.

Edit: Oh, by the way, this is the first mix I ever did on this Mackie 8 bus. My Soundtracs is in the shop, so I feel like I am flying slightly crippled here. (Not an excuse, just letting you know what I used.)

Let me know what you think.

Raw, Is that gargling thing an effect or a bad MP3 conversion.
No, that's an effect. It is a pulsing noise gate that I hoped would sound like tremolo or a strobe kind of thing. Hey, Perdicament did tell us to be creative, didn't he? If you listen to it a few times, it will grow on ya.

I also found another effect that I liked for that part. It lowered the vocals by one full octave and added some wierd gravel. It made it sound like the Devil himself was singing. I couldn't decide which one to go with so I flipped a coin and the strobe thingy won.

What about the rest of it? Any comments?

One more thing..
The drums are good recorded but the drummer has some problems which cymbal to play in the certain part. If you look this outro you clearly see wrong use of ride cymbal in the beginning. When he switch on crash there is suddenly a huge change of energy.

But this is only my opinion.

...sorry for my bad English :)
I am a veteran drummer and I happen to like this drummers' choice of cymbal playing during the outro. I like the way it lays back at first so the listener can focus on the outro guitar rif. Then when the shouting comes in, it echos those changing rifs and accents along with every one. Go have another listen, you'll begin to hear the unique language of it all.

Anyone? Am I nuts?

Raw... Nice Intro...love it.... The stutter I don't personally care for first time around (BTW writing as I listen for the 1st time) Instrumant mix sounds good....chorus is nice w/ the verb...Like the subtle delay on the verses...Getting more used to the stutter thing by the 2nd time around...still don't know if I truly like it though...

the break down vox: the first time around I never liked the vocal performance...what I did on my mix was copy and paste the 2 time around to the first cause that one he was more in key...just a hint* :)

like the dealy fade on the bridge to the outro...good thinkin'

Drums sound real nice in this mix

Overall, nice creative mix and good sound....job well done... I'd like to hea the other 'devil' version that you mentioned...

Although i had a thought that might be worth tryin....with the stutter part...just for shits....maybe try doubling the vox track there and have the stutter mixed in more in the background....so the effect is still there but not so overbearing.... ??? just an idea..could even automate some panning on the stutter thing so that it starts partially on one side and fades to the other in the background?? I'm certianly not trying to tell you how to do it, it's you mix and you can do whatever you want...just throwin in some ideas into the pot...

is it too late to give it a shot? i wanna try out my new computer setup!

No prob! I made a short clip for ya. (short because I am running low on server space.)
Let me know if you want me to mix the whole song that way. If so I should do it real soon because once I normal out my board I'll never get it back.

Wow.. Lots of different styles...

Might as well throw mine out there... it's WAV...

http://download.yousendit.com/54764FDF25A8FA28

There's some problems with the mix... None of which are major, in my opinion... Except for maybe the bass-heavy, bedroom mixed thing.... Not to mention I'm mixing on tiny Roland DS-30A's...

oh well.. give it a listen and lemme know what ya think....

ssh... The vocal should be louder in certain places, the overheads should be a little quiter, the toms lack definition and are too loud, and the kick is giving me problem cutting through... argh!... Then again I'm an early Black Sabbath lover, so my mix has some in common with them.. lol.. bass heavy and thick!

Cool contest though.. Thanks!

P.S. Love the last minute of the song! diggin'!

That site wants me to be logged in before I can download the song.

No offense but, frankly, I am tired of signing up for every friggin website that comes down the pike. A lot of those types of sites offer something for free just to get people to sign up. Then they turn around and sell your email address to 50 other companies. No thanks.

Right on.. My mix isn't that great anyway...

well i gave it a shot.

it was pretty fun to do this one, i got to try out a few ideas i had for mixing stuff, and since i havent had any projects of my own going on for a while, it's nice to be able to mix something that someone else already recorded hehe.
i sort of had some trouble getting a consistent sound with the snare, partly because i don't really know how, and partly because it seems like it was sorta played inconsistently. what i did in the end was make two separate tracks for the snare, one of them severely compressed and the other very very lightly compressed . i eq'd the 'non-compressed' track to bring out some high mid crack to it, and added a touch of reverb only to that track. then i blended it in with the super smashed track and tried to find a good balance. that way the smashed one sorta brings up the quieter parts and lets the snare still be heard, while the uncompressed track makes the louder parts sound more emphasized without really being much louder (since you mostly just hear more reverb when the snare is hit harder). i dunno if it really worked out the way i hoped though...but i'm still learning. i think i need some new monitors soon...

ok so here it is:
http://www.lightningmp3.com/live/file.php?fid=5652

i think i was aiming for a Alice In Chains sorta sound at first. then i just kept messing with it til i got a sound that i was relatively satisfied with.

Here is my very free attempt to this song.

This is my first mix on cubase (used to be sonar).

It's been a while I did not mix and I am now living in an appartment, so let's see what you guys think!

i've been giving this thread a bit to evolve and it sure has.......just a point on all the mixes in general......

there seems to be alot of compresion happining after the mix in the master track....if that makes sence....i've mentioned this befor about the wavy sound and drums droping during higher guitar parts....now i think i have a feel for whats going on....compression in the overall mix instead of per track helpings of processing. does this make sence to anyone?

i'll give all a listen and give individual feedback later....really glad this tune is taking a liking cuz its bad ass!

hey PREDIC----do you have anything that you found to be close to a keeper yet?
PM me about some things ....i want to donate something to the finale mix!

At least I think it's #9 ??? :p

We need some volunteers for judging...(True can ya help out here? ;) )

I believe it's 17 tracks total... I left them as .WAV(44.1/24) files in .RAR format... the files are here:

http://www.perdikament.net/SINSTUDIO1.rar
http://www.perdikament.net/SINSTUDIO2.rar
http://www.perdikament.net/SINSTUDIO3.rar

The mix I did (if you wanna hear it) is here:

I suppose there are no rules as far as mixing goes on it...I tend to like creative mixes so feel free to add any effects.... The way I have it mixed is a pretty close representation to how it sounds live as far as effects go (vocal effects espically) but that dosn't mean that is the way it needs to be done...

the tracks are un touched...it's the raw tracks, no comp, eq, cleaning...etc..

I'll post the deadline once things start rolling...

I believe all the tracks are labled when ya un-zip them...lemme know if there are any problems....

~Perdi

Your mix sounds nice. Im interested to hear how the other mixes sound. The style is a bit too close to Tool though, even the vocals sound Maynardesque. Tool are on tonight in the City next to me actually, but I cant afford it. bah! :(

Tha bass guitar sounds really nice. Well most of it sounds really nice!

Ok. I have not read any of this thread or listened to anyones mix. Didn't want to effect my self.

I did a quicky on this. it's listed as mix contest 9.

There are some issued with the vocal effects right at the beginning I need to fix. I did not catch it till I mixed it down. I really need to break up the vocals into a few more tracks to avoid what I think happened there;)

Out of time though so, I just did it for fun anyway. Oh and very cool song. It was fun. I think if I have an hour tomorrow I will be done and update the file.
I have to fix the begining and work on some voc's in another place.

Oh ya the download is 320kbps

Damn it! there's a track missing. It's small but it's important :o
Back in a minute. with an updated file.
