Heres my mix finally!
I noticed alot of the mixes were either a bit on the thin side or harsh in the highs, so I went for the less high ens approach which I think makes it sound meatier.

Let us know what you think.

Song: MIX COMP 2

I think you should try to improve your kick micing skills. It sounds really dull, and the signal to bleed ratio is quite small so that it's really hard to get a sound out of it that's usable, IMO.

THe mic will have been on the outside with a solid cotton beater head.

eacktronic your link doesnt work

and yes i know my kick drum miking skills are lacking :(

Use a plastic beater head, and if you are using a bass mic(ie AKG D112) then cut a hole in the kik drum skin (other side from beater of course) and place the head of the mic at the hole, half in half out, pointing at the beater (on the other side of the skin).
If you are only using a vocal mic or something(which I dont think you are, but just incase) I would place the mic right inside the drum right close up to the skin facing the beater.

If you had 2 bass mics then you are sorted, you cn place one at the hole and one right up at the beater inside the drum.

The tracks are well recorded by the way, apart from the kik drum, did yous record them?

Ive got the song stuck in my head, well catchy!
You didnt comment on my mix, you not like :p

There are four things you can do:

  • As suggested, cut a hole on the backside of the head and place a mic into the shell.
  • If you do not want to cut a hole, just remove the back completely for recording and place the mic inside.
  • If you have separate stands for the toms, invert a sort mic pole into the drum shell through the tom holder and secure it with the clamps normally used to hold the rack toms. (A lot more work involved here)
  • Get a really good mic and find the sweet spot close to where the beater is hitting the head.

What he said. Or at least put a blanket over kick+mic to cut down the bleed some, if you really want to mic from outside. I had a look at the file and it seems that your drummer is not fast enough to play all the hits with full force. Everytime he plays doubles, the volume drops. So don't forget to tell him to KICK that drum. That's where it got the name from. Later in the song, where he doesn't play as fast, he hits it much much harder.
