Supercreep

Lizard People
Hi guys - This is the very last song for our first album. Forgive the abrupt ending - I screwed up the master because we were in a hurry to post this..

Incanus wrote this one and plays all the guitars and bass.

The synth we added later due to Naka's suggestion for Shaking Hands. Is it too much?

As always, your suggestions are appreciated. We tried to be very gentle with the peak master and so I hope it sounds a little better.

What do you think? The song is Miles Gone By:

Steve and Casey,

I like this a lot! I listened on my headphones first, and the vocals seemed somewhat muddy in parts, but then I listened through my monitors, and they didn't seem muddy.

The guitars sound great.

Drums sound good, maybe a tad more volume on the snare in the instrumental parts.

I really don't notice the synth...

The back up vocals are right on, and the lyrics are very good!

I love at about 1:40 where it takes a turn. Sounds good.

As always, you guys are right on!!!! Your chemistry togather is perfect.

LOve ya B0th!!!

TRUER :)

I really don't have anything to say. Y'all seem to have a handle on recording. Or at least more of a handle than I do. I'm just putting this useless comment up because I listened and feel like I should say so.

Oh, and of course I liked it. I've yet to hear a tune from yous that I disliked. Um, one thing I can say is that I think the thing I like most about your stuff are the vocal harmony parts. They're always done really well. Great job.

Wow,
A whole "sound" happens.
Excellent -
Is it me or do the vocals dip a tiny bit when the bass comes in?
The synth reminds me of Starcastle - I don't know whether it's the sound or the style -p'haps a little of both.
Is it too much - only if you hate Starcastle - & as I have 2 of their LPs I have to own up to liking them, at least in the 70's.
Then again the harmonies are also reminiscent of them BUT the sum of the whole is nothing like them so don't fret that I was about to give you a "sounds like".
A terrific song, great playing & as I said before EXCELLENT.
Cheers

OHHH, now I'm going to have to go & dig out the LPs & play them to see if I was talking through my rectum.

Nice and punchy sounding. I need to learn to mix better. You guys pacjed this full of sound, and it's really clean. The funky type change-up at about 1:38 is cool. Then back to the main...nice transitions. The whole Miles Gone By chorus is really cool. How many voices are there? It sounds awesome. Very cool. Whole song is great as usual, but this one is a bit different for some reason. I think its the fact the main voc is a bit lower sung. That with the main rythum guitar playing those droning notes, has an interesting effect. It keeps building the song up at other junctures, and then drops it back down. And man, that bass just cuts through, yet its not real deep or fuzzy or anything.
Well, after a few listens, I have no more to say at teh moment. Nice tune, guys. Really nice.

Busy arrangements, i really should try to learn something from that, it's exciting with all the stuff happening all the time!,

Soundwise it reminds me of early Teenage Fanclub. The Beatlesque connection I've pointed out before....

No gate on the vocals?, can hear you breathing right at the start! Doesn't matter, just a reflection.

Good stuff, creep, and congrats on the album :)
Where do we get that in it's entirity??

Thanks everybody for the replies - I appreciate it.

Madmush, we're going to start remixing most of the songs next week, and hope to release the album early this summer. Incanus will chime in for sure, but most of the sounds are untreated and we've got lots to do yet for this song. Thanks for the listen.

Dogman - This is definitely in a lower vocal register and I'm not sure how much I like it. I'm not going to rewrite it, but I think I'll be more careful about picking a key next time. Some of it's okay, but the general atmosphere is darker than I like.

RayC - I don't know who Starcastle is but from the name I think prog. I'll check them out. Thanks for listening.

WarrenGtype - As always, we appreciate your time. Thank you.

True - Roffles. I think it sounds a little cloudy too. I think it's the vocals and drums, mainly. We'll work on cleaning it up.. Maybe a HPF or a little gentle eq?

ANother great tune. You guys rock. My fave is The Time I Took. I love that song.

Again, cool singing supercreep. The lyics are excellent.
Interesting chord progressions/sounds too.
The overall sound is excellent on my system.
For the synth, just out of personal preference for this song I'd drop the volume a tad or chose a less high pitched sound.
Catchy catchy song... love the little guitar solo 1:21.
Okay and just a thought, maybe I'm way out there on this, but I can almost hear that synth part sounding pretty cool as harmonica instead.
Awesome track guys, thoroughly enjoyed it :D

i have'nt been in here in a pretty good while......nice to waltz in and hear an excellent tune. are you guys still recording in that storage building? i can't believe the quality you get, sound wise, writing, playing, etc. keep up the good work.

Thanks, Travis... Yep, we're still in the 10x14 tuffshed. Bass traps make all the difference. Thanks very much, I'm glad you like the music. Incanus wrote this one - I think it's a good tune.

Hey, thanks everyone for listening. It's so great to have a place where musicians listen to your music. Non-musicians don't generally give any other feedback than: good, bad, thumbs-up, thumbs-down, black, white, etc. And then they won't really say 'bad' to not hurt your feelings.

Anyway, the synth thing is something that we've been going back and forth on. The sound sort of comes out of left field; it's very, very present. On the one hand, it's not supposed to be a synth 'solo'. And on the other, you still have to hear it (if it is to be in there at all). We tried it with delays and reverbs and dry, trying to find the best way to make it sit properly. (Sit!!! Sitdown!!! Sit!!!! Good boy!) Right now it's bone-dry. I'm leaning on keeping it in, but still a little uncertain.

Hey TravisinFlorida!!! Good to see you back. Thanks for the encouragement--we will keep up the work, good or bad.

Snakedog--Cool idea, but I'm not sure that part could even be played on the harmonica. And there wouldn't be any portamento(sp?). That's a good part of what I like about it.

This post is getting to be to big. . .bye for now.

There's a four vocal tracks on the chorus (a pair of harmonies) and an extra one or two at the end to smooth the transition.

A fascinating tune rhythmically - among other things. Did you guys do the superimposed meters (actually polymeters, I guess) on purpose or did it just work out that way by feel? Great arrangement with interesting parts and wide dynamic range.

My only suggestions are that the mix as a whole could maybe have a little more (1-2 dB) lower mid emphasis (but I love lower mids so take that with a grain of salt), I'd think about retracking the short guitar solo at 1:23 to get the rhythm a little tighter, and the main vox could come up a little.

Very fun to listen to.

Tim

Drums are really crisp and clear - very nice. Would bring the vocals up in spots in the verses - it varies from part to part. Harmonies on chorus are great. Your vocals are my favorite part of all your songs. Not sure but I would maybe bring the guitar up a tad at the break. The synth is sitting pretty well but it is really DRY as you said. Another EXCELLENT song guys!
BTW - saw your recording shed the other day on another thread - cool!

Man, whenever I see a post from Supercreep and/or Incanus, I get all excited like looking forward to my favorite band's next album.

As always, this is too good to comment on, musically and vocally. I do find the low mids a bit muddy, but it gives it a nice, raw sound. Awesome arrangement. That middle break would make Neil Peart proud, very neat high hat work.

To me, I think this is as good as it gets musically. My fave is still "What you Were meant to be". But I think you might have to re-master and re-listen to what's happening in the low mid area. If that's the sound you were going for, then it's cool. But I think it might stand out a bit on album with everything else I've heard from you guys. Just being a little critical because I know what you guys can do, but it doesn't take away from the fact that I would definitely sit forward in my chair and ask someone who this band is if I heard it on the radio. You guys are an inspiration.

Dudes - you know I'm unqualified to say anything about music or mix, but......
I just went from not being able to pick up my head, to jamming - with head, fingers, booty, legs and toes movin' all happy-like, and a big old grin across my face. You guys are the real deal....thanks! :D

Thanks everybody - I think it's clear we need to work on the low mids. Any suggestions on how we might best accomplish that?

We've a RNC and a JoeMeek Twin Q, so two different comps and a decent outboard eq- and a boatload of plugins. Any suggestions?

Thanks, man - it's always nice to know somebody's listening to the words.
This song was a real bitch, to tell you the truth. I sang it several times before finding a melody that worked for the chorus.

That would be a great place for a Chicago-style harmonica solo... But I think that will have to wait for another song, another time. Really really good call though.

Super, I'm no expert at this, but I played your tune in WMP and played with the eq a bit. I found that when I cut 250hz, it cleaned it up a bit and the vocals seemed to cut through more. Mind you, I'm saying 250hz because on WMP, the next closest frequency was 500hz, so I didn't have much choice. So it could be anywhere around there. Also, it might just be one or 2 instruments muddying it up, so you might be thinning it out too much if you eq the whole mix as opposed to finding the offending instrument(s). I'm probably not telling you anything you don't already know...Just thought I'd let you know what I heard.
