In working with Cakewalk, n-Track and several other combined MIDI/audio sequencers, I find the big problem is to get MIDI files to wav so they can be mixed down to a final .wav file that can be put on CD for mastering.
Anyone know of a quick, easy way to do this? A utility? A technique?

Well, you might just be able to use the sound recorder that comes with windows. Open yer midi file, and sound recorder; then hit record on sound recorder and play on the midi file. This will work unless you're using something like Wavesynth Midi, such as that which comes with an AWE 64. Then you may need two sound cards.

I'm not sure what exactly you are asking. Midi files in and of themselves are not music. They are just digital numbers telling a synthesizer or drum machine or some other digital sound what to do, like how loud, or how long to hold a note, what its pitch should be ect.

Lets say you play a part on your synth and have the midi out connected to your sound cards midi in. This will record a midi file to your midi/audio sequencer if it is set up properly. Now if you play back that midi file on your sequencer and have the midi out from your sound card connected to your synths midi in you will hear that synth part played back exactly as you played it.

All that you have to do now is connect the audio line out of your synth and plug it into your computer card line in and record it as a wave file on your computer using that very same sequencer. The problems come with getting the software and the synth or drum machine setup properly to do all this.

Midi can get a little complicated but ask specific questions in the appropriate forums like cakewalk or n-track you'll get there.

One thing I didn't consider was if your synth or drums are in your computer as software. If this is the case the advice above won't help much except as a general guide to midi. Check the other forums for specifics.

Drstawl is the Midi guru around here you should check my advice against his.

I had the same problem and found that the easiest way is to play your midi file and record it on Cool Edit. It's the same as recording it with the windows recorder, except you won't have the one minute time limitation the windows recorder has. I just mix all the tracks, then record them with cool edit, which turns them into one wave file, which I burn onto the CD. Hope this helps.

i do this all the time! with a SoundBlaster card, i select the record function on "MIDI" in SB's mixer. after that i start a new audio track on Cakewalk 9 in my sequence. i now enable the record function on the new track with the "wave in" source selected. i now press record and it will record in real time. when it is done recording...you will see a wav version of your MIDI track! hope this helps!
