I'm trying to add short MIDI parts to songs that are mostly WAVs. Since I don't have a keyboard, I'm using the piano roll thing. My problem is that usually the grid that you put the notes into doesn't match up to the tempo of the song, and the intervals on the time axis are pretty wide. I can't see a way to adjust the settings of the grid. There must be a way, I'm sure. What is it?

Hi Imposter

Nobody else has answered so I'll give it a shot. Generally n-Track's midi function is not regarded as its best point.

I'm not entirely clear about your question, but:

Have you set the midi tempo to match that of the recorded parts? And line the audio parts so they synch with the grid. (This may be impossible!!) Also there is a whole range of grid settings on the drop down grid menu that might help. Also you can turn the quantize off so that your notes stay where you put them and don't snap to the nearest grid line.

It's a very fiddly and frustrating job though - most people find it easier to do the midi parts first then track the audio whilst replaying them. As it is, the easiest way wil probably be to play back the midi part once you've programmed it, record it, then juggle the resulting audio file to fit in with the timing of your other parts.

Hope this helps a little bit - apologies if it doesn't.

Thanks for the answers. They did help.

I should have pointed out that I'm using version 2.0.2 of n-track, so maybe I don't have some features.

I found the grid menu that you mention. I dunno how I missed it. I was blind to it before.

I still can't find an option to change midi tempo. I did a song recently that was recorded at exactly 120bpm and the grid worked perfectly, so I'm guessing that is the default.

For now, I've managed to turn off the snap to grid thing. That should do me for now, I can just place the notes by hand.
