ok....i hope i explain this clearly. I have an mpc 2000xl and a digi 002 rack. now....i control a proteus 2000 sound module via midi with the mpc (out of A and B of the mpc; into A and B of the module). i also want to control pro tools, but i obvioulst have no more outs on my mpc to do so. how do i remedy this? can i send something thru?

If the Proteus has a MIDI THRU connector, that would be the way to go. Connect a cable from the Proteus' THRU to the 002's IN. This is assuming that you're not using all 16 MIDI channels already, and have enough unused channels to do what you want to do with ProTools.

I agree, MIDI through would be a solution - however, are you actually using 32 channels of MIDI (both the A & B) into the Proteus??? I do a ton of MIDI including controlling effects, etc. and rarely use too much more than 20 or so channels.

An option to the MIDI through would be to send the A to the Preteous and the B to the Pro Tools (again assuming you don't need 32 channels of MIDI from the Proteus.

Thanks, mikeh. You spotted an assumption I made, but didn't state -- that macthedoulos actually needs to have both of the MPC's MIDI outputs connected to the MIDI inputs of the Proteus. If that's not the case, using one output for the Proteus and the other for the 002 would be a better solution.
