MIDI input into a THRU port

My setup is a keyboard, separate JV-1080 sound module, and computer
with MIDI in and MIDI out ports. My first step was to do the following:

JV-1080 MIDI in to computer's MIDI out
JV-1080 MIDI out to computer's MIDI in

I did this so I could use a computer program called ChangeIt! to send
and receive SysEx data dumps to and from the JV-1080.

Now I had to decide where to plug in the keyboard. I've since learned
that this is wrong, but I tried pluging the keyboard into the THRU
jack on the JV-1080 (it made sense at the time), and as I played
the keyboard I was able to hear the correct sounds in the JV-1080.
It worked great!

After doing some reading I discovered that the THRU port is for
output to another MIDI device. So, why did everything work just fine
when I used it to input the signal from my keyboard? Will I damage
anything by using this setup?

Can someone please suggest a better way to connect these three devices?

Thank you very much!

As you do more work and accumulate more songs you will probably find less and less need for constant SysEx communication. You will find a set of sounds that please you and use those for most if not all of your music. And with 500+ sounds at your fingertips all you need to do is learn to incorporate program changes and bank select commands into your sequences.

Plug your keyboard's midi out into the midi in of the computer, then the midi out of the computer into the midi in of the JV-1080.
