midi and automated mixing

I've got a couple yamaha 01v digital mixers and 3 ADAT machines. What I'd like to do is, using midi, sync the boards and the ADATs and use the automated mixing capability of the 01v board.

I've read that the board can be controlled by a "external midi sequencer", but...

1. what is that exactly?

2. "external midi sequencers", from what I have put together, are associated with computers. Can I get one without having to use a computer?

3. If I do need a computer, what is required for the computer?

4. What's my cheapest option (as far as "external midi sequencers") here to make this work?

I've got a Yamaha Pro Mix. I've used Cakewalk to record it's fader movements by using the midi port. I'm sure the 01V is the same. But I think you are going to need a computer and some form of midi recording software. If you just want to record the midi from the 01V you can probably get by with some cheap, maybe even free midi software. Sorry, I don't know any of hand. I use Sonar, which isn't cheap.

Syncing to tape is a whole different matter though. I don't own any adats or dedicated audio recording gear, but I do know that inorder to sync it with the anything else you are going to need some kind of dedicated syncing device. There is the Motu Midi Express and Emagics Unitor8. There are cheaper things too. But you will need something that can handle SMPTE/MTC. I've been looking at this stuff lately because I need to sync multiple midi ports and my softeware (Sonar) doesn't support that...so I'm looking at alternative software and methods.

This stuff a little out of my league, but I think you will

1) need a computer if you want to automate (record and playback midi) your 01V mix and

2) need a dedicated SMPTE/MTC syncronizer to sync up the ADATs.

Good Luck,

Nemal
