when using this recording technique are the tracks then panned hard left and right?

I am recording solo classical guitar

much appreciated

Dave

Mid mic stays right down the middle, side mic is panned left then copied to a new track with reversed phase then panned right. The amount of panning of the side signals will allow you control over your amount of width in the stereo field.

Normally you adjust the level of the side channels to control the width, but panning toward center also works.

spot on guys thats how i normally do it.
I just link the two side channels and bring both faders up together.
I normally use a dynamic for mid mic and a ribbon for the side.

looks like a nice mic boulder.
Now i know why i'd never heard of it. Nice price too.
Send it on over the pond to me for a couple of weeks. I'll write you up a honest review of it.promise :thumbs up:

I'm sure the owners would be happy to let me send it over.

Dont you just love the christmas spirit. Send that u87 over too while your at it. Then we can do a blind preamp test :spank:

Something to watch out for as well...make sure your "side" (fig 8) mic's front is facing the left side when tracking. I know it's a fig 8, so it has no actual front or back, but on the mic, usually where the name brand is printed, is considered the "front". For some reason this is something to be aware of when mic'ing mid-side but I have no idea why. lol.

I wonder if that's just a done thing so people know the raw copy = left and the inverted copy = right?

Of course your not obliged to use a fig 8 mic for the side !!!!

That's to keep left and right matched. If you have it the other way left and right will be swapped, which can easily be corrected by either flipping polarity on both or panning both the opposite way.

Actually I think you are. You can use a cardioid or omni for the mid depending on what you're after.
