Mid and side question..

when using this recording technique are the tracks then panned hard left and right?

Mid mic stays right down the middle, side mic is panned left then copied to a new track with reversed phase then panned right. The amount of panning of the side signals will allow you control over your amount of width in the stereo field.

spot on guys thats how i normally do it.
I just link the two side channels and bring both faders up together.
I normally use a dynamic for mid mic and a ribbon for the side.

Something to watch out for as well...make sure your "side" (fig 8) mic's front is facing the left side when tracking. I know it's a fig 8, so it has no actual front or back, but on the mic, usually where the name brand is printed, is considered the "front". For some reason this is something to be aware of when mic'ing mid-side but I have no idea why. lol.

That's to keep left and right matched. If you have it the other way left and right will be swapped, which can easily be corrected by either flipping polarity on both or panning both the opposite way.

Actually I think you are. You can use a cardioid or omni for the mid depending on what you're after.
