As far as your room goes, the corners are probably the biggest issue, with bass buildup being of most concern. Most treatments that are ready made don't help lower frequencies unless they are quite thick (expensive). Overstuffed chairs and couches are great if your room lends itself to that.
MXL makes great mics and I suggest at least one large diaphragm condenser and one ribbon mic. I'm assuming you have a dynamic or two (sm57 type). These are tools for your recording toolbox and they will make the biggest difference for the money at this stage. Cheap mics have gotten so good for the money (like guitars, unlike guitar amps) that you can do some amazing things with a well chosen, low budget mic. I like to use combinations (ie; a condenser set on omni along with a bi directional ribbon).
If you take the time to learn what each tool does as you add it to your collection, you will increase in knowledge and understanding in a reasonable time while having lots of fun, and even getting ideas for new songs as you experiment.
