i am going to try micing drums for the first time this thursday. here's my equipment list:

Microphones: SP B1, E609, Audio Technica DR-VX1 Dynamic Mic
Preamp: DMP3
Mixer: i am using my old Fostex X-55 FOUR TRACK as a mixer (is this a good idea..?)
Soundcard: SB LIVE

ok now i have questions.

1) are the mic's I have good enough to record drums?
2) where should I place each mic?
3) should I buy one more mic. if so, recommend something really cheap but good and where should I place this mic?

thank you very much.

If you don't mind mono drums then, yes. If you'd prefer stereo buy another B1.

As for placement: the B1 is the obvious choice for overhead and the E609 is just begging to be stuffed in the kick. Which just leaves you to point the DR-VX1 at the snare.

Okay

B1: Overhead (either in front of or behind the kit. It doesn't really matter. Just put it where it sounds good)

E609: Put it on a stubby boom stand, stick it in the kick and point it at where the beater hits. Move it in and out and try different angles until you get the sound you're looking for.

VX1. Try it pointing down at the snare a couple of inched above and about an inch in from the rim. Make sure the hats are in the null if you're recording the snare on a seperate track.
