Hi there,

Please accept my apologies if this has been up here before (Newbie I'm afraid)

I want to make live brass recordings using my Zoom H4n plus two additional mics to pick up hall reverb (the onboard mics for close trombone sound and two additional 'budget' mics for further away to give more hall sound). I would be very grateful if one of the forums experts could advise on what mics to purchase.

Thanks for your assistance.

Nick

I'd reccomend doing a little research before posting questions. People here love to help people out, but most don't take kindly to being asked to spoon feed. That said, you're new here, so we'll stop the "ass chewing" and get to an answer . . .

I think you'll be disapointed using the onboard mics as your primary mics. I think you'll want to use your additional mics as your primary mics and your onboards for the room mics. Condesor mics, I think, will not be what you want, you'll want to go with a decent dynamic mic or even a ribbon. I don't know your budget so it's tough to reccomend a mic. But a ribbon would be choice I think.

Hey nick ...did you just purchase the zoom? Or have you tried recordings similar to this before with it.
Do you have any microphones at all to experiment with on this recording project or are you looking to purchase a few new microphones for recordings like this? google up and that a look at the naiant microphones Once there you can ask the owner Jon what he thinks would be the best pair for you.

I have the little brother to this unit, the H2.

I have been really pleased with the built in mics and have never found myself wanting additional ambient sound.

These were done with internal mics with the unit sitting on the sound guy's cab in the back of a small room:

Everything here was done the same way (but in a larger room)

If you do want to add additional mics I would start with AKG414's (if your unit can provide phantom power.)

The hot taper mics are Schoeps and I think a lot of guys prefer CCM4.

Check the website TAPERSECTION.COM

Lots more info there.

Ths is great guys, thanks ever so much... off onto ebay to look for some 414's....
:)
