Microphone question

I've not used one myself but we had a thread in here a couple of weeks ago. A couple of people who owned one were disappointed with the unit because the inputs for external microphones are unbalanced jacks only suitable for high impedance "toy" microphones and very noisy when using any normal mic with an adaptor cable. I imagine a search would find the thread for you but there are at least two owners on here having problems with the DP004.

You don't want to be rooted to your computer!? Get used to it dude. I won't pussy-foot around with it. I think all outboard recorders are a bad investment.

Like everyone here has already a don't buy a CASSETTE 4-track machine, you'll regret it in the long run. The only advantage of having it is possibly getting used to the hands on mixer aspect it offers. Analog does provide more warmth and a richer sound quality, but only if its recorded with a reel to reel machine. Those tascam 4-tracks(I own one) were never meant to create professional sounding recordings, at best lo-fi demo tapes.

Do yourself a favor and save your money for a little while longer and just buy an interface.

Boss makes some decent portable digital stuff - but personally I prefer computers... I have one in every room :p

any thoughts on a Tascam DP-004? Im not fond of the idea of being rooted to my computer.

Depends what you want to do with it.

I use a Boss Micro BR to record band rehearsals, then I convert it to a .WAV file, transfer it to my PC, remove all the "dead space" then we can review it. The harp player uses a Tascam DP-004 and does the same. They both work good for that or for putting down ideas on the fly but I can't imagine mixing down on it, even though it has the capability.

Truth is, given to the power available on the average users desktop nowadays, they're both "toys" but can certainly be an integral part of your overall studio makeup. Like everything else, it's a tool. You have to figure out how to make it work for you.
