OK...I tested some mics at our "local" (as in 2 1/2 hrs away) Guitar Center. I tried out a bunch of mics and then narrowed it down to 2. I then talked the guy into letting me record the 2 mics onto a Korg D1600 that they had there at the store and then burned the tracks onto a CD to take home.

At home, I took my D1600 and recorded my mics to compare. Anyway...here is the "results" of my test. I have recorded me singing a little bit of a song (which, I guarantee, you will be SICK of when you're done with this!!!).

Now...your mission (should you decide to accept it) is to tell me which mic you like best. I have strategically disguised each mic's identity so as not to color anyone's opinion. ;-)

Here's the link: http://theburrellfamily.homestead.com/MicTest.html

I will identify the mics shortly.

Thanks...

3 and 6
but my computer speakers are ick
also your pre amps are ick ( with all respect Harold, you have a beautiful voice)

I think I liked 6 the best. 4 has a nice dark quality to it, and 5 sounded a little thin. The rest sounded somewhat similar to me... YMMV

1, 3, and 5 were too dark for you. 2 was sibilant and thin. 6 doesn't do it for me, detail is ok but it's cold. 4 is best, and I liked 7 too.

Number 6. I played around with some EQ to boost the highs on all the mics, number 6 seemed to have the best detail without being harsh. It seems more present than the others as well. 3 & 4 were decent too, but 6 won IMO.

Once again, 4 and 6, although I like 4 better. It seems to have a little more dynamic sensitivity. For everyone that's saying 4 and 6, just watch them be some cheap Samson mics or something like that :)

JustHarold, I'd like to hear a full recording of that song sometime! I've grown up going to a singing school every summer, and we'll have 300 people from kids to adults singing that song acapella in the old southern harmonies.

4 definately sounds best in my room.
If 5 was hotter I think it would suit your voice well.

God help me, I'm going to be singing those 3 lines over and over and over tonight.

"How beautiful........" Yes, those lines are going through my head too. I vote # 6.

sile2001...that "singing school" you mention wouldn't be Stamps-Baxter, would it? My daughter and I attended a few years ago. It was quite the experience!

I appreciate you all weighing in on this and voicing your opinions. I will post the mic list soon (some of you might be a little surprised).

Oh...and sorry about the song...ringing in your heads...driving you crazy...

Hey when you post the list, don't tell us the numbers, let us guess.

Well, I’m going to be the black sheep. I kept going back to #2 which I liked best over all for this vocal. It had that big, punchy low end while maintaining nice clarity on top without sounding harsh.

The runner ups:
#1 ran in 2nd place, closer to #2 than the others.
#3 had the big low end too, but wasn’t as clear on top.
#6 had waaaaay too much mud for me.
#4 was almost as bad as #6. It sounded better on the loud “Sweet home…” part, but turned back into “mud” after that.
#5 is probably 3rd place for me, only because it beat 3, 4, 6, & 7.
#7 wasn’t muddy, but just sounded too flat somehow.

Good vocal example, BTW. Almost sounded like Elvis! I bet you don’t listen to him much, do you? ;)

2 and 6. I liked the depth on the bottom on number 2 and the overall sound of 6.

i liked 4 the best, it seemed to be the one that would sit best in a mix
