Mic Static

I just started setting up my home studio. So far I just have my large-diaphragm condenser hooked up to an M Audio Fast Track Pro. Everything's working pretty well, except for one problem:

The start of most notes, whether sung or played on my acoustic guitar, come out in the recording with a lot static/distortion. I've tried staying as far away from the mic as I can (without losing signal completely) and it still happens, so I'm not sure what it is. I've messed with the db switches on the mic and it doesn't really change anything either.

Any advice?

Do you have compression on? Static distortion from clipping until the compression evens out?

Try switching your mic cable. It could be as simple as a bad connection. They can do that exact thing. You basicly have to swap out one thing at a time to elliminate each suspect.

You have the channel gain set to a decent level right? Ie, no 'peak' lights blinking at all?
