Mic Preamp?

Hello, all.

Newbie question: In the current Tape Op magazine, one of the interviewees recommends the mic preamp as the main piece of equipment to spend your money on for home recording. I am mystified. I'm used to plugging my vocal/instrument mic right into my Tascam 4-track. What exactly does a mic preamp do? How will it exactly improve the sound of my recordings? Can someone please address these questions in fairly plain terms as you can probably tell that I am not a recording/electrical genius?

Thanks much.

When you use a microphone it outputs a very faint singnal, and before U can use that signal, U need to bring it up to a workable level. To do this you use a microphone pre amp, this gadget brings the signal up to a "workable" level as U turn the "Gain" knob up, and mic preamps are on your tascam 4 track. Those "Mic" inputs on your 4 track are mic preamps.

And different mic preamps will give you a different sound IE a warmer, smoother or cleaner sound. A better pre amp will not nessisarly give U all those sounds, but each mic pre will have its ups and downs.

Hope that helps,

Sabith
