I'm using a Focuserite Tonefactory. and a Mackie 1202 VLZ Pro. My problem is that I think the Mackie has less mid. freq. - and I like that sound .....but tell me that the Focuserite is the best !!!

Yo Morten: [you don't sell salt do you?] {I couldn't resist.}

Mic pres? Two great ones are: Martinsound and one that I have on order: The Grace Design.

Others are fine but it all depends on your ears, and, for sure, budget.

I think two real important parts of a studio would be: one very good mic and one very good mic pre.

As for the "other" stuff: it's all in the budget and "ears."

Mic pre-amps are like seasonings; different people like different flavors. For the most part, you get what you pay for in terms of quality (i.e. a $300 is not going to compete well with a $2000 pre) BUT a cheaper one might be just perfect for a certain song/style/instrument/singer . Let your ears tell you what's best for you and your particular situation - let the opinions of others guide you as to what you use your ears on. If your opinion doesn't jibe with theirs, don't worry about it. Just go with what sounds best to you.

Home-boy, go to the "Rack Forum" !!

That's all they rap about in there!!

morten - let your ears decide what is best.

if you use the focus...and then EQ out the mids, what was the point? could have saved yourself some DSP degen.
