I'm planning to pick up a mid level mic pre-amp soon (Tube Tech MP-1A). I'm a little concerned about my signal chain in that I'm recording through a Delta1010LT which has two XLR mic connections with pre-amps on board.

My question is this, if I pick up a better performing outboard mic pre-amp, would I run the pre amp out to a line in connection on the Delta1010LT or run it to the XLR inputs?

If I were to connect to the Delta XLRs wouldn't this simply add to the noise negating the value of the better pre-amp (two amps in series)?

Comments, suggestions?

The two XLR inputs of the 1010lt can be switched from mic pres to balanced line ins. I believe it can be done with a jumper on the pci card but check your manual to be sure.

Yup

Christaan is right. I also have the Delta 1010LT, and just bought a new preamp myself. My understanding is this: if you want your signal chain to travel from your preamo to the analog XLR inputs of the Delta, you'll have to first take the Delta out of your computer and change the "jumper" configuration on the card itself so it can accept the new signal. See pages 7 + 8 in the manual about this.

Your other alternative (if you preamp provides it) is to send the signal from the digital outputs on the preamp to a digital input of the Delta. (I'm buying the Dmp3, and this is the only choice, I believe..?).

Thanks guys...I'll have to investigate the pre-amp to DI connection...never thought of that...anyone else working this way?

The DMP3 doesn't have a digital output. That would require the pre to have a A/D converter in it, which the DMP3 doesn't have.

I'm not sure there is an advantage to using the XLR inputs on your 1010LT unless they give you a ballanced input when configured as a line input. If not, then just use to of the other inputs and leave the XLR's for a second set of pre's.

whoops, sorry!

I finally received my dmp3 a few days ago -- As Terry pointed out, I was mistaken, there is no digital output in the dmp3.

Regarding what Terry said about using the XLR inputs, yes, they _can_ accept a balanced signal. I'm reconfiguring the jumpers and software settings to deal with the new balanced line level signal as I write...
