I recently bought an sm 57 microphone for micking vocals, acoustic guitar, and maybe my guitar amp. i was thinking i would use my zoom 510 guitar pedal to boost the signal, but the sound is no good. I really need a nice clean signal, but really dont want to spend much. I just need somthin that can raise the volume of the mic without giving a buzzy sound. I was thinking of geting the art mp, anyone use this preamp? any comments or sugestions would be real helpful.
Thanks
-Andrew

(i posted somthing like this in the microphone forum, thought this was a better place to post) ;]

I don't recommend the art mp. I bought the dual mp last summer after hearing so many good things about it, and it sucks. Like a mic, I won't buy another pre without first getting my hands on a stack of them and letting my own ears decide.

hey guys,
thanks, the article made it seem like its pretty good. Vurt, what exactly "sucked" about it? I kinda feel like 100.00 should get me more then the bottom of the line preamp, but as long as it boosts a clean signal, thats really all i need. anyone see any good deals on it anywhere? Feel free to comment more,as well. Thanks...
Andrew

Opinions are gonna vary from person to person...everyone has their own personal tastes...for instance, Sonusman loves the Art...ametth thinks it sucks....neither one is really wrong because I respect both of their opinions....so who should you believe?....yourself....you should find a store that has the gear you are looking at and try it out before you buy it....best guarantee money cant buy....

Thats true, i guess testing it out would be a good idea, but because i cant really spend more then 100.00 for a preamp, and im so used to this awful buzzy sound, im sure this will be just fine. I'll make sure i pick a place with a good return policy though, just in case. ;]
thanks
Andrew

Good return policy= no restocking fee....For $100, your options are the Art pre, trying to find one of the last M-Audio DMP2's, or something used......

hey, ya the dmp2's are around 199.99 so thats too much, i may look into geting somthing of ebay, but most likly ill end up with the art pre,
Thanks Gidge,
-Andrew

I go with winners.

The ART is a winner.

As I always point out, LISTEN to the work done with it.

The ART with a 4033 is a very great sounding combo, and a very nice price! Less then $500US for an outstanding sounding mic pre and mic!!! Who would have thought....

I have put the ol' ART against many "class A" preamps and favored it's use. Not to say that I favored it's use every time, but often, it was the lesser of two evils in a digital recording environment. Especially in digital, hot record levels are important for a good resolution in the sound. The ART, with it's Input AND output control, and varying degrees of coloration allows me a lot of flexibilty in tonal colors as well as achieving hot record levels.

Hey Ed,

None of us doubt the quality results you've gotten with the ARTs, but a lot of people doubt the ART's quality. I'm guessing some of these people either didn't give it a fair chance or didn't quite know how to best make use of the input/output gain, +20 gain switch, etc.

How about a quick and dirty guide on how to really put this thing to use? How to get coloration, clean sound, high gain with the lowest noise, etc. I know, it seems like such a simple box, but I still think a lot of us would appreciate some advice on how to really use it.

hey, i put the order in for the audio buddy, im sure it will be just what i needed, Thanks,

I recently bought an sm 57 microphone for micking vocals, acoustic guitar, and maybe my guitar amp.

MAYBE your guitar amp???? Of those three applications the one it is going to be the best at is the guitar amp.

hmm, ok, ill make sure i use it for micing my amp when the preamp comes in,
Thanks,
-Andrew

Good idea!!!

Sonusman, me thinks Dolemite has a good idea. I have an ART-MP and the 4033 as well. I'd love to hear some tips on how you are using these two together. I've had strange results with the MP and I don't know if it's me or the box. It seems I have to really crank-up the levels on the MP but when I do I tend to get noise and even distortion. So my main curiosity is how you've been setting the levels to achieve good results. I mainly record acoustic guitar and voice.

Many thanks,
Chris

Ooops almost forgot...

Just to clarify I am talking about the Art MP single channel, specificaly the one without the VU meter.

I have two gripes about the art:

1. The high end is weak.
2. (And this is the big one) its one led for checking levels just isn't good enough. Also, several (including me) have reported that it distorts even before it goes into red.

The second problem is fixable buy getting the Art Tube MP Studio, which has a proper VU meter. But it costs the same as some dual preamps on the other hand...

Yes, the MP can distort before the light clips to red. I am not an expert though but I think that is true of tube amps in general though. Right? The screwy thing with this amp is that I have to max out the input level and hit the 20+ switch before I even begin to see the slightest clipping. And I have to pretty much scream into the mic to see it hit red.

I think Ed is using the Dual MP which might operate differently than the single channel which could explain his success.

I am not saying that this amp is bad it just seems quirky and for a novice like myself I think it is a bit confusing.

No, it has nothing to do with tube or no tube. It's just that the meter-led is incorrectly adjusted. Which either means that they don't adjust them at all, or they have employees who are morons.

You experience of having to have +20 and almost max out the input level before it getting red is what I have too. And mine distorts as soon as it gets in to yellow. It's not confusing, it's WRONG, and that sucks. What you have to do is to get it to go to yellow and then drop the level so you are safe. That means you probably end up with some more noise than necessary, which is rather ridiculous. When the warranty runs out I'll open mine and see if I can fix it.
