Mic for "shrieking" vocals

Hello, I was wondering what mic would make a good mic to "shriek" in. Those of you who have heard black metal know what i'm talking about. It's like a growl except high pitched. How is the studio projects b1 for that? I've heard great things about this mic. My budget is around 100 bucks. I'm going to be plugging the mic into my firebox's mic pres. I use cubase LE for my recording software. I also may plug it into my vamp2 first to get a little distortion/delay on my voice while im recording. Any advice would be appreciated.
 
Not so sure about cond mics and black metal vocals. If the vocalist is too loud, there might be a problem.

Perhaps a Dynamic is better for growls and screeches.
 
Yeah, I'd use a dynamic and with the incoming volume as high as it probably is, I'd also be careful with levels on a preamp.
 
Shure SM7 or a Beyer M300/Soundstar II. The Beyer, which is only available used, is a lot cheaper than the SM7.
 
I have an SM57. THink that'll be good for what I need? Also, I don't always sing very loud. I kinda wanna go for a more whipered sound. In that case should I use a condenser mic?
 
I don’t know about the sm57 for vox.

If you got the SM7 you could probably use it for whispering.
 
I am using the SM7 on vocals as we speak....one singer is using it for deeper growls (ala randy blyth - lamb of god) and the other is using it for more of a higher pitch scream (ala the singer from refused)....it is working great on both....
 
I usually use 2 mics at once for singers like that. A studio projects C1 and an sm58 or 57.

I like having the qualities of both.

I would just try the 57, or try to find the best used vintage EV on eBay that you can for under $100.

Chad, are you recording new material for your band? I'd love to hear it when its done.
 
Try an Audix I5, if you can demo or borrow one, it has been working surprisingly well on loud vox for me, and if you go to GC and dig your heels in, they'll sell them for like $70-80.
 
thanks guys. I think I may get a studio projects b1 and mix it with the 57 like metalhead said. The b1 is pretty versitile I hear so I can use it for other things as well. I'm on a strict budget so whatever mics I can afford right now I think should be multipurpose mics. Any tips (singing techniques, FX,gear, etc.) on singing with a "distorted" voice(growling,shrieking,screaming,etc) would also be appreciated.
