So What I'm hearing from you is to get a spool of cable and some connectors and learn to solder. Any preference on spools of cable and cable ends?

For connectors go Neutrik without doubt.

Cable will depend a bit on where you are as different brands are common in different places. I have a liking for Van Damme XKE but there are lots of other good ones.
