I've always liked the way an SM81 captures sound and I'm considering buying two. I already have (2) 603's, (4) Ecm8000's, (2) 4033's and (2) C3000B's for condensors to use in pairs for overheads etc...

With that in mind, would I benefit at all buying the SM81's or will it be a waste of money?

Thanks,
RF

Well, you don't say what kind of stuff you are recording. But if I had your present collection, I'd skip the SM81's (since you already have four small diaphragms), sell the two C3000B's, save a little more money, and buy a good large diaphragm mic for doing vocals. Maybe something like an AT 4060.

That assumes you are recording vocals. If you are recording three or four acoustic guitars at once, then you probably are better off getting the SM81's.

It's mostly hard Rock...
I agree about selling the 3000's! I really don't care for them at all.
Thanks,
RF

I don't see how you can get by without a pair of SM81's.

You'll use them for all things acoustic, and they'll make you throw rocks at the 603's. :p

You said you like the way they capture sound. I think that would be a good indicator.
