3. Because of the stage show. These Metalcore bands swing their guitars around a lot almost like swords, lol! It looks really cool watching these bands play a live show.
Sure, for the first 20 times you've seen it. Then it's just repetitive. But yes, it was pretty cool at first.

The SG is just a very cool guitar hands down. Black Sabbath is considered to be the first real "heavy metal" band and what guitar was Tony Iommi playing and still playing to this day? A Gibson SG , of course! I don't play metal, just classic rock and blues, but I love my Gibson SG Standard. I love the feel of the guitar and I have serious tone 24/7/365. I am also an Angus Young fan! The Les Paul is way too heavy for me. I'll take an SG any day!

wow like anyone should credit hardcore/metal tone at all.

I wouldn't call it "tone" either.

my girlfriend has a Gibson SG ...and its a real fun guitar to swing around and chop air.

I think it's because people see bands that have "made it big" and they want to replicate it. Pretty much every band I've seen lately has one SG and one LP. It's like a metalcore combo meal or something.

That is one of the smickest looking SG's I have ever laid my freaking eyes on!

Very nice!
I'm so jealous!

I hate you! :)

couldn't have said it better myself

I'd say it was cool 4 or 5 years ago, but today? Not so much.

The reason you see all those kiddies with their F'n Gibson SG's is because they are completely immersed in their little "image" and its obvious that playing a SG is the best way to the fans on your nuts..

I like so totally had an sg before they were cool. :D

I'm just joking around. But it is weird that people associate them with hardcore or whatever. I never really thought of them as a hardcore guitar, but then again I've seen people put emgs in a strat. So who knows? Atleast they're not using 335's or something. That would just be insanitity.

Kurt Ballou from Converge plays Rickenbacker Dakotas, which isn't too conventional, especially for Converge's style.

From what I know, SG's are pretty manueverable, I've seen some of the bands two-step (read: Not what's in those rap videos, ugh... rap-metal) in time to the beat while playing. It's pretty cool.

I am 45 years old and just bought a Gibson SG Standard in Heritage Cherry finish this year. I have wanted one for about 30 years. I tried out all kinds of guitars....Les Pauls, Strats, Flying V's, Firebirds, etc. and the SG sounded the best and felt the best in my hands. I guess I am just one of those kiddies looking to improve my image. I'm not getting any younger you know!

Any one have opinions as to why they play them so high?

I believe it's a combo of a few things.

1. Image, image, image!

...beside's that fact that fashion is probably the strongest element in one of these bands.

But besides that has anyone looked at where the volume and tone controls are on an SG. Way way south, in the 90's the trend was put the main volume right close to your pinky where you can get to it. ESP's are like built like that you can roll your volume off quickly before you swing your guitar foolishly like some geek you seen on MTV. Mua-ha-ha.

I agree. really though, gibson sound without the weight of a Log Paul, gibson name appeal, the body design is akin to flames on a hotrod, 2nd place appeal-by this I mean Les Pauls are king in the gibson line and the sg is the underdog, less loved, middle son with a bad attitude vibe, yet still a classic guitar.

Actually, I've gone back and reevaluated my position, and I now believe it may be that they all want to emulate Angus Young.

All kidding aside, which metalcore bands are you folks talking about that you see using SGs? I don't really know that I've seen anyone using one since I saw Snapcase like 5 years ago.

You guys are all wrong.

Have you ever looked at the average metal-core guitar player? They aren't doing it to be cool. They're skinny little twirps who can't support a Les Paul. It's not their fault. You guys should feel sorry for them.

:D Lol. Yeah if they wanted to play a les paul they'd have to eat something. :D

Seriously though I hate them too. I play metal but I'll be damned if I'm to get a girls haircut, dye my hair black, wear a youth large t-shirt, and tight girl jeans.

I guess I'm not as cool as thoose guys.

But, I do love my sg.
