the thing is

i record in garageband and all i have is:
1. mac's sound preferences with input slider from 1 to 100%,
2. track sliders in gband with dbs.
3. gain knob on tascam for mic/instr input from min to max.

so,
thats why we have such a long conversation. sorry i did not explained it from the beginning.

maybe we have mac/tascam users who know how to set up all those things properly? its too much fuckin knobs to set up. which goes first?

yes, of course i can use my brain remains and experiment, but would be nice to know how it should be.
thanks very much

In your situation, the only one that matters upon input is the preamp gain on the interface.

guys,
why my tascam 122L records only in one channel of the two in stereo? i mean only one channel of waves. second channel sits empty.

when i switch to another (xlr or 1/4 jack) input on tascam 122L, the other channel is active, but still, only one.
it should be stereo, isn't it? wtf? garageband kinda shows waveforms in both channels during recording, but when i finish, it finishes as a 2 channel track, but one channel is empty. also, only one level meter is active.

i set inputs in garageband to stereo and everywhere else. btw, my built in 10.5.8 mac's mic records in stereo, but tascam does not.
does tascam records this way, and stereo can be achieved only by using both (L and R) inputs simultaneously?
many thanks. waiting for a help. helpppppp

It's really hard to tell what your issue is based on your description. You should probably start a new thread in the garageband technical issues section. you might find better help there.

the issue is very simple.
i use sm57. tascam 122L records a track in stereo (2 channels), but only one channel has waveforms, and other channel is empty/no waveforms.
even my macbook's built in mic records on both channels of the stereo when i use it as input. but when i switch to tascam and shure sm57 it only records into one channel. wtf?
hope thats much clearer.
thank u.

Do you have two different microphones plugged into the two inputs?

no. one and only sm57 into the one tascam xlr input. (tascam has 2 pairs of xlr an 1/4 jacks)

but, if i plug the same sm57 into another input, then tascam records onto opposite channel leaving other empty.

it looks like that if i want waveforms on both channels(l&r), i have to somehow split my sm57 into both inputs or use 2 mics simultaneously.
is it NORMAL? is tascam designed this way, that only records waves on one of the two stereo channels???

why my laptop's built in fuckin toy mic(when i set it as an input for garageband, for testing purpose only) records in both channels of the stereo, but tascam only in one? i want to use my sm57 (not built in mic), but tascam does not record waves on both channels.
wtf?
thanks mate, i want to start recording as soon as i can. the question is: is tascam designed this way or not? thanks

That's the way it's supposed to work. When you plug in a mic to channel one, it will only record onto channel 1. The reason the crappy input on your computer records onto both channels is because it's crappy.

You don't need to set up a stereo track to record one mic. Set up a mono track and and choose the channel input to be whatever input you have the mic plugged into.
