Metal Guitar Tone - Critiques please!

I would just experiment a bit with EQ, seperate the left and right channels by cutting in slightly different ranges, and experiment with the low mids and high end a bit to give it some better fullness. I like the playing, solid. one thing, you won't really be able to hear the guitars correctly til you have a bass in the mix as well. so don't crank up that low end too much.

wow, digging my thread up, thanks!
I agree with what you guys have said about this tone, I actually went on a spending spree for my studio and decided to pick up a 5150 II as well. I nabbed a brand new one for 700 bucks. :D I prefer it's tone by far for the music I do, so unfortunately this style of tone has been ixnay'd at metalhead studios....haha

I am currently in recording heaven, my purchases in the last two weeks:
Sonar 4
Drumkit From Hell Superior
Elemental Audio Full plugin Bundle
Sansamp RBI for bass
Peavey 5150 II amplifier
M-Audio DMP-3 preamp
Dean Fretless bass
New Taylor Acoustic/Electric

I know this is totally irrelevant to this thread, but I'm just thrilled and I feel like yapping about it! :p

It sounds fine by itself. However, if you start mixing more of the bass into the mix, you can achieve some really powerful sounds. You can make both the bass and guitar sound as a single unit to achieve that really heavy sound...of course you also need to consider the kick drum with the bass too.

I would recommend bringing the guitar down, and the bass up and start mixing the two together. Not sure how to explain it, but when mixed in a certain way, the bass and guitar can add another layer of distortion just in the mixing process.

What mic setup are you using?

Btw - the guitar sounds pretty tight with 6 tracks...nice job.

id say just add a little low end and your home free.
I love the crunch. Very masterof puppets sounding....good stuff Metalhead.

I agree with whoever said it just feels like missing. Like I can hear in my head how I think it should sound, but I can't describe it. Maybe more "open", if that makes sense? I have no idea how you might go about changing your tone to match what I hear in my head though, obviously. The closest thing I can think of is my friend when he would ring out on a low C chord (we've tuned to C in our last few projects) and then turn the master volume up on his head. You just sort of hear the sound open up, for lack of a better description. I don't, for the record, think that it needs more low end. That will hopefully get filled out by the bass, kick, and lower toms (and vocals if you're doing death metal).

II would be interested to hear some metal fan's opinions on what artists/albums achieve the "quintessential" heavy guitar tone.

Aforementioned friend swears by Carcass' "Heartwork" as having the greatest metal tone ever, and he listens to way more metal than I do. One of my personal favorites is "Rust In Peace" by Megadeth.

Nice tone. Maybe a bit more low end, but nice riffing...can't wait to hear it. Don't wuss out on the vox!!!

Thanks for the replies everybody. I have definitely taken this advice to heart.
By the way, "Heartwork" does have some bad-ass guitar tone! ;)

I'd say you nailed it for that metal tone... let the bass guitar and the kick drum fill the bottom accents that are missing... it's good clean high gain tone you have... and your right about monitoring it loud... how many metal heads do you know that listen to that style below anything but 100db? lol.. not me!... so if you can listen to it for lengthy periods of time with out ear fatigue from having the highs overpowering so can your listeners... so you know what that means right?... Go LOUDER.. yahahaha!

That sound would be good in a final mix. Live maybe a hair more bass.

Holy shit, where did this thread come from?

HAHA, thanks!

Hey metalhead,

I love the tone, if I had any opinions in regards to constructive criticism it would be that it sounded just a tad fuzzy around the edges!

I would like to hear what just 3 or 4 of the tracks sound like!

And with the bass and drums with seperation between the kick and bass guitar I think you will be kicking ass in the tone zone!

Nice Work! :)

yeah, that is 6 different performances
I have used the distant mics alot in the past but was always a little unhappy with the end results. Also, I always seemed to have more phase issues when doubling parts even if I got the two mics jiving really good on one take. When I did it that way i usually resorted to just one performance per side to avoid that. I will put a little more effort into it and see what I can get.
Thanks for the comments!

that's pretty amazing. I thought you had copied and pasted some tracks, it's so tight. nice sound. I'd like more highs, but these computer speakers at work suck, so...
