"Megaphone" sound ???

How do you get that megaphone sound? Is it in the mic, fx, or a combintation of the two?

I'm trying to think of some examples..... hmmm...

maybe Linkin Park's "Points of Authority" where he's going "forfeit the game... puts your name to shame..."

You hear it also in a lot of techno/rave/whatever
 
It's more an EQ effect: leave only the mids and add a little distortion.
 
Linkin Park borrowed that from a group called Slow Roosevelt, who used the black and grey Radio Shack Megaphone. It's considered the standard megaphone to use.
 
you can do similar by singing through a slightly distorted guitar amp.

I got a decent "megaphone" sound using a guitar amp simulator plugin that came in Sonar. I think it was the revalver.

I suppose there is no substitute for a good vintage megaphone though, if you can get one!

Megaphone

I've had real good luck using a cheapo radio shack mic (with the 1/4" plug) going right into a distortion stomp box, then right to tape. you can dial in as much crunch as you want.

The nice thing is any crap mic sounds great...

That would merely amplify the vocal signal and not create the desired mid range distortion.
 
Mabe get yer self one of those $10 radio shack megaphones like someone suggested. I've seen many a singer use them.
 
Artists and groups have been using the "mega-phone sound" and AM Radio sound for years on recordings.

Doesn't anybody remember Ian Anderson's vocal in Aqualung?

How about the vocal in One Night In Bangkok during the 80's?

If we all made a list, we could probably name at least a hundred songs that have used this effect.

Done, re-done, and over-done.

If you really want to impress people, try doing something that's never been done before. ;)
 
And if you get a megaphone, please for all that's holy don't waste your time with cheapie $10 or $20 ones. That's ridiculous. You need at an absolute minimum a Neumann M (for megaphone of course) 1000. Dual triode, legendary pre-war German capsule and a D/A converter built right in. Yeah, it's $1,800, but really how can you put a price on quality.

That is ludicrous. It is like the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard, hands down. I really am not kidding, that is just absurd. What could possibly be the point of spending all that money on crap like that? There's no reason!

Everyone knows that you shouldn't even bother unless it is a real tube megaphone, like the Behringer Ultramegaphone Pro. It also should be powered with Behringer Ultrabattery Pro tube batteries, only.

You might also consider a mod. I would suggest the Behringer Ultravocalchord Pro tube vocal chord modeler for the vocalist. Just get your trusty Behringer Ultraknife, or Ultrascissors (also tube, of course), and give the vocalist's neck a few jabs so that you remove their old vocal chords, and have room to put in the new modeler. Once again, it should be powered with Behringer Ultra Battery Pro tube batteries, only.
 
Hwta exactly do you mean? The Old "Megaphone Crooner" 1920's 30's thing or you mean like "Would you please disperse there is nothing to see here" crowd control thing?
