I'm looking at possibly purchasing an MD8. I have also been looking at the Korg D-16. I like the idea of recording to mini-disc as opposed to a hard drive. With the D-16 offering 16 tracks for about the same price (after the $100 Korg D-16 rebate) I'm torn. I have heard some good things about the MD8. I wanted to get some input from MD8 users that might help me make my decision.

I have the md8 and i love mine. I really like being able to just stop recording, remove the disc, put in another disc and start another song. Most people are concerned with the mini disc because of data compression, but for me that has not been a problem. Some people can hear the compression, and some people think they can hear the compression. I think if i move up it will not be in the all in one boxes, but individual components.

For me, the comrpession is a dead issue. If you don't believe me go to mp3.com and try to find someone who recorded on minidisc just by listening to their songs. I've been meaning to put up some .wav samples of how the compression sounds but I havent gotten around to it.

Anyway, the d16 is cool, but I think the md8 is better.

*MD8 pros and cons*
+analog mixer
+removable media
-price of data minidiscs

*D16 pros and cons*
+16 tracks
+more compact size
-the last four tracks are stereo (so it's more like a 12 track)
-digital mixer
-limited recording space (hard drive)

of course, that's all subjective. I would say a better alternative than the d16 is the new akai 12 track. i think it's in the same price range and it looks pretty impressive (although stil a hard drive recorder).

What about the new Tascam 8 track, has anyone looked at one? Don't know if you can record all 8 tracks at once or not.
