Are you saying that the sound coming out of the Crate is what you would consider good??..............Just checking. :)

Sometimes you gotta stick your head down where the mic is going to be to get a better idea of the sound that the mic actually sees.........uh...hears. :)

I don't know...I'm only using the Crate thru the clean channel while using the PSA-1 as my pre-amp. Do you think the Crate is actually hosing my frequencies? Possibly the speakers?

I wish that I could play for someone live...I honestly don't know if the sound is actually any good. Unfortunately, it's all relative to my own experiences.

Sonixx, are you using any compression on that clip? I'm using my e609s in my signal path and am getting nothing near the frequency response that you are getting...
Hi David,

No compression but Vintage Warmer at a very very low setting, mainly for the low end... No EQ... I did roll off above 7500Hz.

Often I do run the Vintage Warmer at a much more extreme setting though. I seldom EQ post tracking other than Hi Pass at 60Hz, Low Pass at 7500Hz and maybe a Hi-Shelving at 10K +2db

Here's my signal chain:

EMG81 -> Cobra Head Crunch Chnl -> Hot Plate @-8db -> Cobra Cab Greenbacks -> SM57/e609S -> Mackie 1604vlz -> RME ADI-8 -> Samplitude

The Channel and Master Vols were at 3:00

The mics were aimed just ever so slightly off-center

When I track, I monitor with a pair of AKG 171 phones and set the amp with the phones on. I have no clue as to what the amp sounds like in the room... and don't care. Also, 9 out of 10 times I point the mic directly at the dust cover.

I'd like to understand what you consider crappy... can you post something?

Sonixx,
Here are 2 short clips:

This one is raw:

This one has EQ and a multi-band compression on the guitars to bring out some mids. There is also some compression on the mix.

I really appreciate you taking the time to listen. Its just really missing something...?
Dave

Dave,

I just listened and my first impression is that it sounds like mainly preamp gain... I run my amps almost full bore because I prefer the tone of pushing the power section... can be much thicker.

I'm not familiar with your chain and amp.

How loud do you record?

What tone are you going for?

I agree, it needs to be much thicker.

The Crate amp is solid state and the built-in pre-amp is horrible...hence the PSA-1 pre-amp added in my chain.

Do you think that cranking the amp might overdrive the speakers a bit to get a fuller sound? I'll try that. When you say 'full bore', are you approaching max? I currently have the amp level at about 3...which is loud enough that two people cannot have a conversation without yelling.

It is an open back amp, so I put it on a futon to absorb some of the waves coming out of the back.

I'm trying to achieve something similar to Dimebag from Pantera. I don't want it, or expect it to match exactly. I'm just trying to use it as a point of reference (Walk - Vulgar Display of Power)

I don't know Dave... I'm not sure you're going to get there or even close with the amp chain you have. I have virtually no experience with SS amps, but I think it's going to take a tube amp. Maybe someone can chime in on your setup and help if you can't change amps. I don't think turning up the volume with your rig will make an appreciable positive difference...

yeah, I run the Channel and Master Volumes at 3:00 or about 8 and with the Hot Plate it's still very loud, but I track with the AGK 171 phone's which are designed for isolation.

Sorry I can't help more...

Sonixx, I really didn't mean to hijack your thread. But is this any better?

yeah dave... that's much thicker and less buzzy... the top end is smoother

what did you do differently?

-keith-

I had a 3rd guitar track centered, but playing 1 octave higher. I removed it.
Then I did some rolloff on the upper frequencies. By making it simpler, I think it made it sound better.
Thanks again!

Just want to say Thanks Sonixx. A 421 has been on my list for a while and hearing those clips was great. Sweet Riff too... you wouldn't happen to be into the Melvins would you? For $100 the e609 doesn't seem too bad and blended w/ a 57 works... but the 421 is it for me.

Keep on Rockin'

good deal...

I roll off above 7500 and sometimes add a shelving at 10K
