My Yamaha MD 8 of 8 years has finally croaked. The hint of trouble started a couple of years ago when, at the time , the "disk locked" code would appear. It finally went through the TOC and all was well. Now, it has died. It won't read or write. It tries to do a TOC and hangs up. Tried several Disks with no success. All other funtions , readouts appear to be OK. I suspect the drive has crashed.
Has anyone had similar problems or perhaps has a parts source? I do radio electronic repair and may be able to do the job myself... I'm not prepared to invest hundreds of $ for repair services. I'll just have to get a similar recorder otherwise...
I don't trust our local "authorized" repair stations as I've had many inept techs trying to fix stuff without good results. (San Diego)
I really like the features and recording quality of the MD-8 and would like to get it running again..
Any thoughts, etc.
Tnks,
Tony : :(

I can't comment on the failure, but...

Yamaha does repairs on the MD8 and all their other older gear. You may find service and contact info on the Yamaha website. For however much it may cost to have Yamaha fix the unit, at least you'll be certain it's done right.

As far as DIY repair of Minidisc mechanisms goes, I think it's beyond the scope of most DIY'ers, as you must have a special MD alignment disc, and a service manual, for starters. You'll also need a DVM and oscilloscope, minimum, which you may already have.

(IMO), By the time you've bought the MD alignment disc and MD8 Service Manual, it would probably be cost-equivalent to Yamaha Service and repair. Not doubting your techincal abilities in the least, but I still think Yamaha Service is the best bet on repairing the MD8. I'd not trust the MD8 to any "local" service tech.
