Hey all, I'm new to the board and I'm sure that you all hear this everyday, i want to get into this business but i have no idea where to start. I came upon a college in Minnesota called McNallySmith College formerly Musictech. I was wondering if anyone has ever attended there. It seems like a really good program that offers internships, but I'm not sure if its worth the 30k price tag....any thoughts?

If you REALLY want to waste time and money, go there. They specialize in wasting students time and money and are experts at it.

I lived in Minneapolis while MusicTech was downtown, and the quality of students was just sad. If you are serious about music at all, a school like that is the last place you want to go.

Buy a self-contained DAW for $1000 and learn to use it by working on it eight hours a day. Within 3 months you will have learned more than in a $30K year at MusicTech/McNallySmith.

The same goes if you are a guitar, bass or keyboard player. Or a drummer. Buy a quality instrument and devote the same amount of time as you would if you had decided to go to one of these 'music trade schools' and you will get much farther much faster.

Yes, it is.

Take ten minutes sometime today and make a list of half a dozen things that you want to learn. You can write your own list much better than anyone else can. The term for this is 'cirriculum design', and anyone who tells you that you're not qualified to do it is wrong.

You might do well to find a local school or a local musician/producer/recording engineer to tudor you if you're not confident about doing completely independent study.

You can go a long way in the music world for $30K - as long as you keep it out of the hands of the staff of MusicTech now McNally/Smith and other 'schools' like it...

Thanks alot there, I think I've heard all i want to hear about about it, my skepticism has come to fruition. Thanks once again
