I'm just curious to hear your suggestions for low noise matched pair omni's under $1000. They'll be used to record chamber music in rooms with good acoustics. Thanks!

I've never done chamber music, so maybe I ought to refrain. that being said, these are both mics that I own and might consider using.
dynamic - ev635a
condenser - at4050

I'd use the MSH-1As with a Jecklin disc, up fairly close (which suits the configuration anyway). They do have a higher noise floor than something like the DPA 4061s (around $1000/pair) so I wouldn't use them for distant mic'ing, but they'd work very well a few feet out from a chamber ensemble. Good sound quality.

EDIT: had my DPA model #s mixed up so never mind - the 4061 actually has higher self noise than the MSH-1A.

Earthworks are allways worth considering, though a little out of your price range.

Gotta love 'em on overheads!

I hadn't considered the DPA 4061's. Are they sold with power supplies or as matched pairs?

Location Chamber and Orchestral Music is my full time recording gig, and I have tried all of the big omnis and some of the smaller ones..I suggest grabbing a pair of AT4050s. A pair will be about 800 USD from ebay..The DPA 4060/4061 and 4090 and 4091(and the earthworks) are , IMHO, unuseable due to the self noise. It is immediately obvious to even the most untrained ear. No, they arent sold as matched pairs either because the tolerance standards are supposed to be very strict....now the high end DPA omnis are great ,but the 4060/4061 and 4090/4091 arent very good. (same with earthworks)

The 4050s are flat, very low noise, and are built like tanks. They are also multiple pattern mics, so you could have the opportunity to use blumlein or M/S..(Blumlein is superior to any stereo technique, given that all else is equal, imho)

I would also suggest the ADK SL Series Microphones. They sound PHENOMENAL, price aside.. A pair of those would also be about 800. You could get the SLs and the MSH1s for well under budget.

I also second the jecklin disc. It gives fantastic seperation and imaging, equal to that of a spaced omni pair with none of the unwanted side affects(hole in the middle, uncontrolled LF)..You should not use a omni with an enhanced low end, as due to the nature of the Jecklin/OSS technique, there is a very pronounced roll off of HF , and with "warm" mics , the result will be mud..

Cardiods and omnis both should be in your kit, as well as a low noise, high gain preamp. (transparent is up to you, but low noise and high gain are undebateable)

What are you using, preamp-wise?

I use a Mackie Onyx 400F that then goes into both a Fostex D-5 DAT recorder and a Tascam DV-RA1000.

I use the DV-RA1000 too(as a 2ch backup/mixdown deck from my multitrack rig). The onyx pres are pretty clean, so youll be fine there.

I highly suggest those two pairs of mics...ive spent a lot of time researching this stuff, and those two are real winners.
BTW, ive got the newest firmware(1.03) if you need it for the tascam

Who needs to know how to type to record? Spacebar is play and ctrl+Spacebar is record! No need to spell things out. Use abreviations. Vox, GTR, OH, kik, etc... :D :D :D

Does anyone have any experience with the Audio Technica 4049a's?

What about lower self noise test/measurement mics like the Audix TR-40 and the THE Audio KP-6M? Does anybody have any experience with those?

I dont.., but I know MBHO makes some capsules for Audix..(Im not a fan of mbho really)..If it were me, I would go with what has been proven, personally..If a product hasnt been spoken about that much,, there might be a reason for that. ;)

Oh wow. That's just classic. You can just call Big Ray "Big freakin' illiterate can't spell Dumbass" from now on.

.

The audix m1290-O's are a good deal. Also might be worth checking out the stuff from Line Audio at http://www.lineaudio.se. They're mostly handmade in sweden, but the capsules are Japanese. Good deal there...don't be thrown off by the prices either...the Swedish Kronor doesn't have much against the dollar.
