Tex - you are clearly right. And our demo's are for friends and club owners!! Sounds like Harold's aiming rather higher.

The thing you missed out was the "fun" and "learning" bit, which is why most of us are here, I suppose.

I would call home mastering about as fun as painting in the dark but to each his own ;)

You might as well print 20 mixes with random EQ settings and pick the best one because in the end it's the same result.

One thing to consider is that in the final analysis, it's the final product that matters -- regardless of the monitors used to achieve it. While having the best monitors may help attain a top product most of the time, with the least amount of hassle, it doesn't mean that great recordings can't be mastered on lesser equipment some of the time -- particularly since Harold knows his own voice, knows how it has sounded when mastered by others, and lastly, knows how he really wants it to sound regardless of who masters it.

The fact that by doing it himself he can keep doing it till he's really happy may have more impact on the final results than having access to 20k monitors (nice as that would be). One thing to try is to listen to his last commercially mastered CD through his current monitors to "see" how it sounds, then mix accordingly on his new production. This isn't foolproof, it takes way more time (including trial and error preliminary mixes to be listened to on lots of different monitors -- cheap, and hi-fi), but it is a lot more fun.

I will back up anyone who says buy Bob's book. Bob is a one-of-a-kind guy, and has a heart for teaching. If you notice in the thank you's in the front of the book, he thanks all those that will come after him, so he's not just another "Mastering Guy". I have a chance to meet Bob and go up to his studio next month, and I can't wait.

So to your question of monitors... how about your converters, Lavry makes a great set for about $8,000 and then you may want to buy a Sadie system, and maybe the GML Mastering series EQ (around $8,000), but I'm with Blue Bear when he recommends the Adam monitors, although Dynaudio does make a set for about $19,500! And have you thought about 5.1, just multiply the costs by 10.

So to anyone who craps on Blue Bear for trying to let this guy know that you CAN NOT just grab some mid level gear and start mastering, why are you here. You're not helping anyone by telling them that they can do it.

Just my .02

Later,
musik
