mastering in SF

I got Chess's mastered disk the other day! That was pretty quick. He included 2 pages of notes as to what he did. If you could try to keep some notes as well, I think it might help us uneducated folks try to learn what to listen for, and what the 'tweaking' actually does.

No real deadline on yours, just send it whenever.

Shailat, You still out there? You still have someone in mind for 'experienced' judging?

I wanna try to set up something for all the "commonfolk" to be able to listen and judge as well, not sure what kind of interest there'd be....

I would love to compare the 2 mixes, as i'm sure a lot of ppl here would..
 
I've been busy... but it's finished... I just have to write up some notes and I'll get it out to ya....

(2 pages of notes??????) :eek: Hmmm... there wasn't that much "mastering" required - it was a decent enough mix........ I guess we'll see soon enough!

Anyways, if I don't get it out to ya today, I'll get it out to ya Monday!

I haven't fully mapped out how to get this to others to hear. The idea is we have 3 copies of the same song. 1. Original Mix 2. Chess Rock's "Mastered" version 3. Bruce's "Mastered" version.

Possibilities:

1. Blanks & Postage - You send me a blank CD and return postage, or enough $ to cover the costs of my blank and postage, and I send you a CDr with all 3 tracks on it.

2. Broadband - I could post .ape files (see Monkey's Audio Compression) for you to download and listen.

3. Not-so-Broadband - One might argue that compression would remove the nuances and differences, but I could make some high bitrate MP3's for downloading/listening.

Let me know what you think about this...

I would download a few 50 meg wav files with my 56k. Doesn't bother me..I'd just let it go while I was at work or something.

If the mp3 was at like 320 kbps or something ...that would be ok.not really smaller than that though...

I definetly want to listen and compare...
 
Here's a vote for posting MP3s of all three songs.... Even if it hampers the "judging," I believe it would be most useful to the greatest number of people.

And let me say thanks to all involved in this little experiment. It sounds intriguing and, for me at least, promises to be educational.

. . . Yea, but I'm pretty skilled at taking simple things and drawing them out . . . I can be quite the babbler. :)

But yea, I agree, it was a very nice mix to begin with. Won't we be pissed if the untouched version wins.

One thing regarding the judging... I assume the people judging will not be made aware of which cut is whose (ie, blind listening test)??

Absolutely!!!

Just to add excitement, "judges" will hear 3 songs: your "master", Chess' "master" and the original mix. All they will know is A, B, and C. I'm the only one who will know what A, B, and C are, and thus, I am excluded from being a "judge".

A quick question for BlueBear.

Will you be mastering on your event p6 monitors?
 
Not only - I use a number of references - small and large PSBs... the Events w/sub, my small Tannoys, a Panasonic boombox & also clock radio, also the car stereo (Pontiac Grandprix GTP).

You use a sub with the p6's? For mixing too? Or just mastering?

What kind of sub?

I picked up a pair of p6's and found them to be a little bass shy....but got used to them....
 
I use a Tannoy PB110 with the Events.......... it is properly setup only to extend the extreme low end response of the Events, not to overly accentuate the low-end.

In true spirit of the competition, I used what a lot of home "engineers" are probably using.

I have a pair of AKG 240 headphones. Also a pretty run-of-the-mill home stereo . . . oh, and of course, my girlfriend's boom-box. :) The bulk is done on the AKG's, though.
