mastering in SF

Hey, I'm going to have to revoke my 5 star rating if this thread keeps going in this direction.

We want to see a clean contest! Let the games begin already! :D

I am concerned . . .

When yet another person who claims to be "professional" has to resort to potty-mouthed bathroom wall jibberish when he finds himself losing some ground in an argument.

Don't you guys have to get degrees to do what you do? It appears they don't have overly-stringent entrance requirements in Mastering School.

By the way, this is a forum that is supposed to be about SoundForge music editing software. Why don't you share with us some of your in-depth knowlege on this software product, if you supposedly know so much?

. . . Didn't think so.

I think the judging should be handled by the pros... otherwise, any "nuances" are likely to go unheard or unrecognized...

Someone already offered a submission.... and I'm not sure a point spread is the way to go... either you want to prove your point, or you don't.... point spreads give you "shades of gray".......

So let's go!

Askes himself a question and answers himself.......
Better you read the whole post from start. The name calling and flames started with you. Just remember if you get nasty I'll get nastier.

I was right....low self cofidence AND a small dick.

I suggest you leave it at that.

Either you prove your point or you don't . . .

And my point was that my work could come CLOSE to yours -- within a couple of points of the "experts" work. Hence, my idea of the point spread.

Plus, I'm a little concerned in the level of objectivity of the pros. This is basically a contest pitting an amateur against a pro, and I would think the pro would have a vested interest in the outcome.

What's wrong with soliciting opinions from both camps?

What's your take on this, Queu?

ahhhh,
Now that we are back to normal tones, I would suggest a middle path of both but not combined results.

The Average person can vote and a different voting evaluation
by a pro.
I am willing to give it all to a pro a colleague of mine and let him judge as he has no interest in this whats so ever.
If he has no knowledge of who it is or who is a pro or amateuar
It will have no effect on his objectivity.

I have no problem with a mixed vote either - I was simply expressing my concern that the "average" listener may not be critical enough to judge.

Bruce

Good point. Still, someone who frequents a forum on home recording would likely be at least a step above the average listener. I like Shai's idea . . . get some opinions from both camps . . . then let people decide for themselves.

Also, if the professional stuff is truly that superior to the PC master, then even the average listener should be able to notice at least SOME difference in quality. And if they don't, then I've proven my point, somewhat, and scored at least a moral victory.

Let's bring it on . . . I'm ready to go. Where do I download the WAV file?

I'll try to summarize, then.

Closing these issues:
We'll have 2 sets of results, 1 expert, 1 open to HRBBS.
The submissions will go through me to be 'blinded'. That should be enough to ensure an unbiased opinion.

No 'official' point spread. Chess, you'll have to establish for yourself what 'close enough' is...

Open issues:
Scoring:
KISS->Keep it simple, stupid? Rank the overall quality of the master on a scale of 1-10? (One being lowest and 10 being the highest?)

Source materials:
You guys wanna use Chris's (mixmkr) stuff? Maybe an MP3 preview so you can decide on which of his tracks he should send me? Chris, can you make any of those songs accessible for a preview?

barefoot - a 5 star pissing match?
chess - I think Shai is right, you started the name calling with the variations on spelling Shailat. I'm glad you both stopped (for now.)

Sounds good . . .
I'm sure Bruce will agree with me on this one. I'd like to know some specifics on the recording before getting to work on it. Where was it recorded? How many tracks . . . what kind of microphones and preamps did he use . . . what did he record it with . . . what kind of eq/effects have been applied . . . etc. etc. etc. (?)

Barefoot: No trash-talking? C'mon . . . it is a competition.

Chess,
Although that sort of info is relevant in the context of learning about the entire process of recording, it is somewhat irrelevant to the task at hand, which is mastering. I'm sure Chris mixmkr will be glad to supply the info if he has it.

I'm gonna send him a PM to ask about the mix, in case he's not watching this thread...

ok...I'm ready to go...sorry for the delays...hey...I have a day gig too!!

I might recommend for previews:

http://www.mp3.com/ChristopherHarwood
the song would be the first one..."Spanish Nights."
this song is an instrumental with acoustic guitar, etc.

or..

http://www.mp3.com/LostPilot
the song, "Lost Pilot."
this song is a hard[er] rock song with male, *growley* vocals, heavy guitars...etc.

or...last but not least

http://www.mp3.com/theupperroom
any of these songs (there are 5 songs..probably the first couple will work...like "Trust")...they are all sorta similar in sound...to a degree
the genre is Christian rock (HEY!!!... don't let that scare you away!!) but the sound is more adult contemporary with POD guitars, synths, female vocals..... and no...no sleazy Christian crap....at least in my opinion!

If none of these work...I have others...but wanted to offer a variety.

Also...I thought it would be best to snail mail a CDr...if not, D/L off MP3.com...but I think starting with a MP3 file is a BIG mistake. Also, downloading a .wav file is impractical....I thinks...So...mail CDrs???? (I think that best...right??)

if so....email with your mailing address, and I'll get them off.
Oh...also, I can supply details of recording...but I suppose a song needs picking out first. I would recommend the stuff off the last link (http://www.mp3.com/theupperroom).

Chris,
I never intended to use the MP3's as actual source material. Just figured it would be adequate to do a 'test listen' to see if they could pick out a song to master without you burning/sending a cdr.

Chess and Bruce and Shailat and whoever else wants to get in...
Have a listen to Chris' MP3's and see if there's one you can pick out. If you don't think MP3 is a good enough format to even pick out a song, then say so, and we'll figure something else out...

Oh and Christian rock doesn't scare me, songs are about life... Some people have more Christ in their lives than others, and it comes out in their songs...

I agree..a test listen is in order first, imo.

Hopefully, they will be something suitable for this experiment.

I'm not going to participate in this. I didn't mind at first but after rereading this thread I've lost my appetite. If you want my help then email me.
If anybody is so curious as to my work then do a search on the BBS's clinic to hear any of my mix's.
Or can listen to bits at www.geocities.com/shailat2000

Shailat,
Can we lean on you when it comes time to find the "Expert Panel" for comparison/contrast vs. the thoughts of the uneducated and untrained masses?

Yeh,
But I'll pass it on to a colleague who masters daily as I dont want to get invovled anymore. He will completly be objective and I wont tell him what it's all about and who is invovled but let him judge for himself. If you want more then a single person then I'll ask some more engineers to give an ear.

Thanks, Shai...

It will probably be a little while before we get to judging...

I listened to MixMkr's cuts...

My preference would be for either -

1) Its_time_to_Get_Your_T.mp3

OR

2) Upon_That_Distant_Hill.mp3

Chess??
