Martin partners with Roland

I think Chris Martin is gonna be disappointed with how this product works out.

Hmmm...a playing partner has some sort of limited edition Martin cutaway dreadnought equipped with a Fishman Aura pickup/preamp that does substantially the same sort of thing. It sounds very good through my Fender Jazzmaster Ultralight.

I will reserve my judgment of the pickup until I can hear it myself, I personally thought it sounded great, but then again with all the crowd noise and the fact that NAMM just sucks if you want to demo acoustics I think I will wait till one turns up in GC and I mess with it for an hour.

One thing I hate about pickups is the presence that they put on a guitar, when my playing style is much smoother and more mellow. My hope is that this will be useful to someone who plays a more soloed acoustic sound. Fishman sounds good in a band I think they cut through, now if this thing will mellow out and sound like a guitar I play then sure I might be into it.

Course I am gonna wait till I can buy one for myself, rather than get a Martin to run it through.

I think the people who buy it will be disapointed. Chris will be happy if people buy it. That's not a knock on Chris, by the way. He has been doing a lot for the last 10-15 years to expand the Martin product line so they can fill more niches. Which is important, if the company is going to continue in this day and age.

They said its for the working musician. That to me means live work. As far as i am concerned, you can't do anything but improve on the current sounds i have heard coming from plugged in acoustic guitars.
Yeah, of course it's for live work. I agree with your sentiment; I've also heard a lot of acoustic performers whose guitars sound like crap. But I don't think it's the pickup per se so much as it is the mix in the PA or amp. Everything sounds so brittle/harsh, and (imo) it's usually due to an EQ mixed grossly hyped on the high end. Or just plain cheap pres/EQ that you can't do anything with.

I have an old Fishman Blender. I have to set the barn door EQ/blender for every room, sure. But it sure as hell ain't rocket science getting a warm sound to start with and then getting an acceptable final mix.

This Roland thing, I just don't see why anyone would need to model an acoustic guitar with a modeler/pre connected to...an acoustic guitar. Especially when it could be easily amplified. Unless they just don't want to spend the bucks for a decent PA (or amp) suitable for a live setting. Feedback is not that hard to control.

Both Martin and Roland are very well respected companies, so I'll wait to pass judgement.
