Yeah, that's true. There's no way Ill be able to put it in overhead baggage. Mind you, judging by the gigantic crates that people seem to stow away these days, I'd probably be well within the norm.

I had someone bring me back a Les Paul on a Qantas flight once, via overhead lockers, but that was domestic, Bris to Syd, and a few years back before they got all antsy about baggage allowances and carry on luggage etc. Good luck but I'd say it will get stowed. The only Martin case I've seen (a friend has a D16 I think) was very lightweight - hopefully you'll have a better one.

A D28 case will fit in most overheads. There are a few exceptions - mostly on older planes. It takes up almost all the room, so your kind of being an asshole, but no more so than anyone else on most flights. If it doesn't fit, ask the flight attendants if you can put it in the coat closet. They frequently will let you do so. It is absolutely the way to go, if you can do so. The most important thing to remember is to ALWAYS be polite with the folks at the airport and the airlines. Also, get on the plane as early in the boarding process as possible, or there won't be room for your guitar.

I've had great success with Qantus and BA when it comes to carry on. As light says ask nice;y if you can use the coat locker. They will often let you if your polite. Many years ago I took one on board and the Capt spotted it. Turned out he was a player and he took it upon himself to stow it and invited me up front as well to have a chat about guitars and the like. Sadly those days are gone and these days with the strict hand luggage limits it's getting harder to carry on.
I have seen some terrible damage as a result of airlines but most if not all have been down to poor cases.

Oh God! The horror!
I've seen them smash guitars to splinters through Calton "Flight" cases! The worst one looked like they took a giant hook - the kind of thing you would see on the end of a crane - stuck it in the top of the guitar right around the end block, and dragged it through the top until it encountered the neck, at which point it tried to make the guitar fretless in the most destructive way possible.
Most of the time your guitar will get through the airlines just fine - but when it doesn't, they can wreck guitars better than anyone on the planet!

I don't know what you fellas are on about when you say things like strict carry on limits and all that. When I came back to Australia recently the plane was full of people carrying virtual full size suitcases as carry on luggage plus huge backpacks.
Then of course when the plane pulls up, everyone stands up immediately and reefs their shit down so they can stand in the aisle with their necks tilted for 15 minutes...but that's another story...

So...I bought the D-28. It's a 2008 model I think. What's the word on 2008 D-28's?

My uncle, who bought my D-28 new in the early 70's, used to buy an extra plane ticket for it and put it in the seat next to him. Plane tickets were cheaper back then (as were the guitars).
