Marshall JVM410

Hello folks,

My first post, sorry if the topic has already been discussed.

I've been looking at the Marshall JVM410 half stack. A good amp? I was looking as Mesa Boogie, too. Any other suggestions? I play classic rock, blues, pretty trad rock and roll stuff, but no metal or anything like that. More ACDC, Cream, Kiss, that sort of thing.

Any thoughts, comments, suggestions would be appreciated.

probably what everyone else will say....

you'd probably be better off finding a used 800 or something along those lines.

marshalls are probably more suited towards the music you listed as opposed to mesas. that is IN GENERAL only though. use your ears.

I should really have said this in my original post: The JVMs haven't come in to my city yet, and I was just wondering if it's worth holding off until I can try one out.

Otherwise, an 800 or a DSL or something will probably be the go. That said, I've played one old JCM 800, and it sounded tinny, but it could just have been the dodgy old amp. Bit of pot luck with the old ones, I was told. Have you tried a JVM out and compared it to, say, the 800? Marshall's spinmeisters says the JVM can do a passable 800-like tone and more besides. Hype I would imagine? Or is there some substance to it? There is the possibility of a second hand DSL 100, too. Would that do the job do you think, giving I might be able to pick up a bargain?

they are also very expensive since it will definitely be new.

i personally cant tell you which one would be better, only tell you what i might consider. outlaws gave some good info on marshalls and some links to ones on sale on ebay in a recent thread here. hopefully he'll come around with some suggestions.

if i was really only focused on that true marshall sound, id look more into the dsl or tsl series. but if versatility is important to you (ie very clean tones, multiple channels) then the jvm sounds like a good fit. id never expect it to get fender clean tones, but a marshalls a marshall. all i can say is there is a reason that new amps brag about sounding like old amps. they simply kicked ass the way they made them the first time.

I am really want to play one of these. They look good, and there is a lot of potential for them to be a real evolution in guitar amps.

They don't have 10 channels. They have 4 channels, with multiple voices for each channel. There is a separate reverb control for each channel (buffered, if I recall, so its as good as true bypass), and the reverb tails off after switching to another channel rather than just cutting out. For solo work, that is possibly the greatest thing since sliced bread.

No doubt people will hate it because it has digital technology, but there is real potential in this thing. The fact you can take all the digital out of the signal path is nice sign that Marshall might have finally got their head out of the clouds.

That said, I still need to play it.

Yeah, if the JVM lives up to its billing it could be really cool - plenty of different tones, a fairly easy way to switch between them and recall settings. Probably 3 times as much as second had DSL, but a lot more versatile, as you say. Depending on what you can do with the midi "crap" , that may be fun to mess about with a midi footboard: I wonder what settings respond to midi events ... but ultimately, as Outlaws says, it depends how it plays, eh! Anyway, thanks for the advice Adam, appreciated. I'll line it up beside an 800, a DSL and a mesa boogie and see what happens.

It will be interesting to see how the clean channel sounds ... and whether it is a good substitute for the 800 for rockier sounds and whatnot. It could be cool. I can't wait to have a play of one!
