Marshall 4x12 vs 2x12 cab

So....a week or so ago I posted about feedback problems on my Marshall head/Les Paul and it was suggested that I downsize from my 1960a 4x12 cab to a 2x12 cab so i can push the 50w JCM2000 that I have a little more. This seems to make sense and I'm considering it, but I want some opinions. I/we play clubs and small theaters, around 1000 capacity at the most usually, which I know a 2x12 could handle. Any opinions on downgrading? Sound issues? Should I keep what I have?

I don't see the use.
Check at the back of your cab, you have a mono/stereo switch. place it to stereo (8ohms I think) and set your head to 8ohms (or the same as written on your cab). You now have a 2x12 cab. Is there a big difference? Not much.

This may be a stupid question, but with it switched to stereo do i need two speaker cables out from the head? Sorry, but the ohm thing confuses me.

If you are only running one side of it in stereo, you only need one cable, and you only need to set it to 8 ohms. If you are running both sides stereo, 8 ohms each, the ohmage from your amp will depend on how it is wired. It's probably parallel, so in that case you would set it to 4 ohms.

hey there... if you are having feedback issues try turning down your gain a little...... or try not standing directly in front of your amp...... if you want to run it in stereo you need 2 cables...... hope this helps

dave..... Marshall head isn't stereo. There is no use to have 2 cables. Just have one cable plugged in mono for the 4 speakers to work, or 1 cable plugged in one of the stereo jack to have 2 speakers working.

2 cables in two stereo jacks is the same as 1 cable mono, since marshall jcm isn't a stereo amp.
