Are the Mackie Onyx mic pre's significantly better then the VLZ 3 sereis is it more that they are firwire compactable?

Dave

I don't know about the vlz-3 mixers, but I have an onyx 400F, which is a rack-strip firewire interface. They have the same onyx mic pre's and they sound great. Really warm sounding.

I have the 1640 and really like the preamps. You can record a pin dropping . Very quiet. Mackies support is not the greatest, but what comapanies is ? Ive used my 1640 mixer/interface for thew past 3 years with not one issue. In my book you cant go wrong. :drunk:

I have the same mixer and i love it. I upgraded from a little Yamaha and will never look back. Sounds warm, clean and powerful.

I may save up and get the Mackie Onyx i 820.

A few weeks ago I mentioned the Mackie Pro FX 8 . When I initally got it I thought it sounded great but after using it it for a while I realise there is something missing. I compared it again with the previous model the Mackie DFX 6 and I must admit the DFX 6 wins hands down.
There is much more clarity on the mic pre's in the older Mackie DFX 6 to my ears.
My only worry is that if I get the Onyx , will it be the genuine Onyx or will it be a Onyx made in the new Mackie factory as with the pro FX 8.

I am actaully going back on what I orignally said about the pro FX 8. Please ignore my prevoius post on it as I now know its no way near as good as the VLZ 3 802 or the DFX 6.

I should have A & B'd it with others before I brought the Pro FX 8.

I want to get the Onyx for the firewire homerecording purposes.

I bought the 820i a couple months back, and I love it. The pre's are a significant upgrade over my old digi 001, I love it.
