The current issue of Sound On Sound is singing the praises of the Mackie Onyx 400...saying it's next generation AKM mastering grade converters & Onyx technology preamps make this unit's sound hard to beat in the pro-audio converter range.

Anyone have this unit?

If so...how does the conversion sound (taking into account the interface alone...purely as a converter...aside from the pre's); & how compatible is it with SONAR operation?

Thanks,

You might want to read the mackie forum...I have decided to hold off on this unit beacuse it's new it's an early phase for it- it has some issues.

One of the issue being converters- I heard the A/D converters are quite well- but the D/A ones on the other hand are pretty dissappointing and not recommended to mix off of... this is what I've been reading from the Mackie forum about this unit,

check out the thread over @ HC-Andertons review. Good stuff. Mike Rivers is even there with a user with a scope. There seems to be a IM distortion coming out of the D/A, and or the unit itself. If I read that correctly, it was only @16bit, so hmm
Also, there's some deal with whining with the firewire or some such. Seems like a ground loop problem? I'm not much on electronics, but my guess is that is grounding somehow and maybe related with the firewire-is that possible? But its rather hit and miss for the firewire issues.

I've got my eye on it too. Could be a great contender-if that firewire and D/A issue is corrected.

oh forgot to mention, they even got R. Gene from GS involved. Alot of subjective opinions amuck, but some good info too.

You guys have GOT to quit spreading the "brittle DA" crap around. THat was one person as far as I know. 20 people so far have said it sounds great. I think its sounds great. Very nice.

No whine here, no brittleness. So far just trying to make everything work together and play nice. I'll get it. MOre in the computer forum.

Thanks guys...

Was really hoping it was rock solid right now...now I'm not so sure.

tube...

What are you using it with (DAW wise)?

Tubey, Not trying to spread any bad rumors.. Just that, he(GS thread) is credible to a good opinion me thinks.
That said, I did mention that it is subjective. Ya need to hear for(y)ourselves.

Hey we're counting on ya for a good review.. hint hint :D
