M-S placement

I've started experimenting with M-S micing using the M-Audio Octane. Here are some pics from last night's session. I was wondering how this placement looks to those who use this technique regularly.

NOTE: The close-up of the mics (last pic) is where I ended up recording. The cardioid's diaphragm is centered above the figure-8's.

EDIT: That's my buddy Darrel playing his Fender acoustic.

Yep - looks familiar! :)

The only difference is the mic placement that I use, where both mics are vertical, with the figure 8 mic (SP B3) right-side-up (on the bottom), and the uni (SP B1) is upside down (on the top), with the tops of the mics almost touching. I would think both configurations render the same sonic results.

Try it with a drum kit too. ;)

Nice pics...I'm gonna start doing some mid-side on drums in my new house. Baby Bottle as the mid mic, at4050 as the side, with an Audix d6 on kick.

I've wondered about this. How would you place them for drums? Out in front? Overhead?
 
I've been wondering the same thing. Since mine will make up a good deal of the drum sound, I'll probably put them a couple of feet out front, maybe 4' off the ground. I think over the drummers head, angled downward, would probably also work well.

I position them in front of the kit, at ear-level. It's scarey how great the imaging is! ;)

I like M-S but I haven't tried it on drums like Double K here has. I've done it with a pair of AT4050s but without access to these in my home I will probably get a B1 to go with my B3 ... or maybe I could get a second T3 and do it with that!!!

Yeah, I just read somewhere that ribbon mics are great for M-S.
 
a question

i've done this with very good results on acu, but i have a question

whichever side i phase flip always ends up a little more quiet then the other, due i suppose, to phase cancellation.
don't notice it too bad in a pair of monitors, but it's obvious in headphones.

am i missing something, or is it just an inherent drawback of ms?
 
Could somebody send a pic of GOOD MS over a drum kit

Just curious...these pics were helpful to me, and I'd like to know of options for miking a drum kit this way. Are there a variety of good placements? If somebody posts or sends me some pics of how they've done it succesfully I'd really appreciate that.

Also on the subject...how do you pan the MS mic signals when you're mixing?

Well, I'm still new to this technique, so others may chime in, but I recorded the acoustic as a stereo track, so it's already panned hard left/right. The Octane (the mic pre I used) has an M-S matrix built in.

How are you recording it? From what I've read one of the nice things about M-S is that there is less chance of phasing.
